BMW Open in Munich, Round of 16, Wednesday, 16.04.2025, 14:00 hrs

The fight against the crisis is now continuing on home soil. Alexander Zverev is the big favorite at the BMW Open in Munich. After his recent setbacks, he was at least able to start the tournament successfully.

Match number two brings a German duel, in which the world number three is of course favored. In my Zverev Altmaier tip, I will therefore tell you why the underdog could well grab a set here.

It was a victory that did him good, even if it came at the earliest stage of the tournament. Alexander Zverev started the BMW Open with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Alexandre Müller, hoping to finally win the fight against his crisis.

For weeks, experts have been wondering what is going on with the world number three (Carlos Alcaraz overtook him last week). In Monte Carlo, he was defeated by Matteo Berrettini in the first round, and in Miami he lost to Arthur Fils in the round of 16.

Since his final at the Australian Open, Zverev has never won more than two matches in a tournament. In Munich, he has yet to secure that second victory.

He didn’t succeed in everything in his victory over Alexandre Müller. Only 48% of his first serves were successful, but he still only gave up one break. Munich is not his absolute favorite tournament, although Zverev has already stood at the top of the podium here.

He won here in 2017 and 2018, so those triumphs were a long time ago. Since then, the 27-year-old has only made it to the last eight at best. And what about Daniel Altmaier as an opponent?

They have faced each other three times in all-German duels. While Zverev won in 2022 and 2023, Altmaier took victory in 2024. 7-6, 1-6, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 – Zverev’s two victories were not that clear-cut.

Last year in Acapulco, Altmaier also needed an extra set to beat him 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. So it’s definitely going to be a hot contest between these two. Has history influenced the odds in our tax-free bookmakers?

Alexander Zverev is, as was to be expected, favored to win the game, with odds averaging 1.15 to 6.00. Of course, this won’t bother Daniel Altmaier, who has nothing to lose as the underdog.

This is only the third time he has competed in the BMW Open, and he has only managed to secure a single victory so far. That was in 2025, because this time he got off to a successful start. He fought a thrilling duel against Tseng Chun-hsin, and the spectators got a lot for their money.

The German prevailed 7-6, 7-6, which was more than close. Although he won 84% of the points on his first serve, on his second serve he only won 36%. What was impressive was his break rate: 3/3.

I really liked the 26-year-old in Monte Carlo. He knocked out Felix Auger-Aliassime and won against Richard Gasquet, only against Carlos Alcaraz he had nothing more to say in the clear 3-6, 1-6.

In this game, however, he was not as without a chance as the result suggests. He could have broken ten times, but in the end he only did it once. What Altmaier is missing this year is simply consistency.

Sometimes he is knocked out in the first round by supposedly easy opponents, then again he gets much further than expected. He has not yet managed a strong result in Munich, but maybe that’s exactly what will work out this year?

My Zverev Altmaier tip

Predict Alexander Zverev’s matches? Great, it’s easy, as you know, not much can go wrong – that was once! Currently, it is incredibly difficult to analyze Germany’s best tennis player correctly, especially after the failure in Monte Carlo.

The form is definitely not right. Daniel Altmaier may be individually inferior, but his class occasionally flashes in 2025. Since the direct duels never ended smoothly and the underdog showed strong nerves in the first round, I predict:

Altmaier wins a set against Zverev!
