Tottenham Hotspur – Southampton
With only 10 points, the Ivan Jurić-managed Saints are bottom of the table – and, of all things, face a clash with Tottenham Hotspur, who, despite currently being in 14th place, are not to be underestimated. Last Thursday, Spurs lost narrowly 0-1 to Chelsea and will be out for redemption. Southampton have no fond memories of the last time they faced Tottenham, a 5-0 win for Spurs in December 2024. Both teams are now in desperate need of a positive result, albeit for completely different reasons.

Tottenham form & record check
Tottenham are going through a difficult patch at the moment. Under Ange Postecoglou, they have only managed one win in their last five matches, and their offense often lacks the necessary spark – despite prominent names like James Maddison and Heung-Min Son. Especially in the first half, the team often look harmless, which leads to inconsistent performances. At the same time, shaky defending causes further problems. This game against Southampton could therefore be a crucial test to finally get back on track.
A 4-3-3 system is the most likely option for Tottenham under coach Postecoglou. Vicario is likely to be in goal, protected by a back four of Spence, Romero, van de Ven and Udogie. In midfield, Bergvall could line up alongside Bentancur, with Maddison taking on the creative role. Up front, everything points to a trio of Odobert, Solanke and captain Son. Radu Drăgușin (cruciate ligament rupture) will be out for Spurs for a long time, but alternatives such as Danso, Bissouma or Richarlison are on the bench. It remains to be seen whether Postecoglou will stick with this formation or go with Kulusevski.
Southampton Form & Record Check
Southampton have been in a frightening tailspin for months. Although there was a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace recently, the Saints also gave away the lead shortly before the end. With only 10 points, they are stuck at the bottom of the table, and defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis is already lamenting the humiliation of beating Derby County’s negative record. Their defensive frailty is especially noticeable after the break: in the last five league games, the Saints have always conceded goals in the second half. Even if the team shows commitment, relegation seems almost unavoidable.
Given the precarious situation, Southampton are expected to play a 3-4-3 system. Harwood-Bellis, Bednarek and Stephens are likely to start in the back three. Behind them, Walker-Peters, Downes, Ugochukwu and Lallana will presumably form the midfield, while Fernandes, Sulemana and Onuachu should provide the goal threat. Several players are missing due to injury, including Larios, Taylor, Smallbone, Fraser and Stewart – an additional burden for a club that is desperate to avoid the looming record for the fewest points in a Premier League season.
Tottenham – Southampton head to head & statistics
In the last five direct duels, Spurs have won two and Southampton have won once. The teams have shared the points twice – most recently in March 2023 with a 3-3 draw. The balance of power was particularly clear in December 2024, when Tottenham won 5-0 away from home and set the course early. In general, at least two goals were scored in these encounters, and the Spurs always scored before half-time. Southampton conceded each time, but celebrated a notable success in February 2022 with a 3-2 win – a rare bright spot in this rivalry.
