The Werkself from Leverkusen have to face the Red Bulls from Leipzig at home in the BayArena. These two teams are a clash of enormous quality and attractive attacking soccer. Xabi Alonso’s team are currently anything but in form. They struggled enormously against both Gladbach last weekend and Jena in the cup.
And Leipzig only just scraped through at home against Bochum last weekend. Despite everything, the two are currently tied on three points each in the top seven and will be looking to leave the competition behind with their next success.

Leverkusen Form & Balance Check
After the unbelievable last season, it is certainly difficult for the athletes on the pitch to stay motivated. They won everything except the Europa League and didn’t lose a single match in the league. The start to this year has been quite mixed. In the first match, which was played under competitive conditions, they were behind until the last minute against Stuttgart, but then managed to equalize and win on penalties.
The first league match was similar and the game was tied for a long time until Wirtz put his team ahead in stoppage time. During the week, they then had to face fourth-division side Jena in the cup, who played very bravely and were able to upset the Leverkusen team. However, a goal from Jonas Hofmann midway through the first half was enough for the Werkself to progress to the next round. However, this first phase of the season looked anything but confident
Can they build on their home strength?
It’s the first home game of the new Bundesliga season and a look at last year’s statistics reveals that Bayer were incredibly comfortable at home last season. In 17 home games, they won an incredible 14 times and only drew three times.
They did not lose a single one of these games. With the resulting 45 points, they were logically in first place in the home table. They won 3-2 at home against Leipzig last season and they would certainly like that result again on Saturday
Leverkusen facts & analysis
- Fourth place in the table
- Last game won 3:2
- Only 1:0 in the cup against Jena during the week
Leipzig Form & Balance Check
Leipzig have made a relatively solid start to the season. They faced RW Essen in their first match of the season, which took place in the DFB Cup, and were 1-0 down early on. However, the goal acted as a wake-up call and in the end they deservedly and clearly advanced to the second round with a 3:1 win. Their opponents in the first league match were VfL Bochum, a team that had played in the relegation play-off last season to avoid relegation.
RB found it extremely difficult to find a gap in VfL’s compact defense for the entire match, but shortly after the break Nusa scored the liberating 1:0. But even this goal hardly gave any security, also because Bochum had good approaches themselves. In the end, however, the visitors were unable to equalize
Weakness away from home?
Last season, Leipzig always managed to put in a good performance at home, but they had their problems away from home. In 17 away games, they won eight, drew four and were beaten six times.
With 28 points, they were only in fifth place in the away table. A poor goal difference of 37:27 underlines their weakness on the road. By comparison, they conceded just twelve goals in 17 games at home.
Leipzig facts & analysis
- Seventh place in the table
- Last game won 1:0
- Captain Orban suspended
Leverkusen will once again start in their usual 3-4-2-1. Xabi Alonso will of course call on his senior squad again and will probably start in the same way as in the last league game against Gladbach.
Leipzig will also stick to the same system as last week under Marco Rose. However, Rose will be without captain and central defender Orban (suspended). Klostermann will replace him in the back line
