Wimbledon, 2nd round, Wednesday, 03.07.2024, 16:30
The 2nd round of Wimbledon is already a first for Daniel Altmaier! He’s already had his first thriller on the holy grass, hopefully it didn’t take too much energy.
The second round is scheduled for Wednesday and the German is the clear underdog here. In my Shapovalov Altmaier betting tip, however, I’ll tell you why I would still go for a set win and why I’m using Oddset’s odds of 1.67.
Five sets – right at the start! For Daniel Altmaier, Wimbledon has started the way he wanted it to: With a win. However, the wish had actually also implied that he wanted to get away with saving energy.
And that’s exactly what didn’t work out at all. Things went back and forth wildly against Arthur Fery, with Altmaier triumphing in the end with a hard-fought 4-6, 7-6, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1. At least the improvement in performance towards the end was clearly visible.
He only made use of eight out of 21 break chances, while his opponent converted seven out of 14. So it was definitely a break festival, which doesn’t exactly indicate that someone had his service under control.
It was above all his second serve (44% points won) that caused Altmaier problems. He made nine double faults, another statistic he urgently needs to improve before the 2nd round
In Sassuolo, the 25-year-old had gained new self-confidence and reached the final. Three times three sets, four tiebreaks – Altmaier has been dealing with longer matches not only since Wimbledon.
Previously in Puglia, he reached the round of the best four, so it would appear that the man from Kempen has coped quite well with the change from clay to grass. Now, however, he is facing a real test.
For the first time in his career, he will play a match against Denis Shapovalov. He will have to be prepared for his opponent to play the one-handed backhand, with his left hand.
According to our betting providers, the chances of victory are rather slim, with the odds averaging 1.15 to 5.00. Should Altmaier still win, he will continue to have his eye on the 2024 European Championships from London
In addition to all Wimbledon tips, you should definitely take a look at the European Championship bonus offers at our bookmakers, because lucrative winnings are also waiting for you here.
But now back to London, or more precisely to Denis Shapovalov. Can the Canadian, in whom the enfant terrible often comes through, be pigeonholed? Difficult!
He got off to a very confident start at Wimbledon, winning 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 against Nicolas Jarry. However, his preparation did not go as he had hoped.
At the Surbiton Trophy, he lost directly in round 1 against Aleksandar Vukic, a little later in Stuttgart he won by a wafer-thin 7-6, 7-5 against Matteo Martineau, but then lost to Matteo Berrettini
The 25-year-old has yet to reach a quarter-final this year, which quickly underlines the fact that he is not in top form. His current position in the world rankings? Number 121!
Why is he still clearly ahead in the odds against Daniel Altmaier, even though the German is ranked 80? Apparently, Shapovalov’s top time, which was a long time ago, is still having an effect on the bookmakers.
In Wimbledon in 2021, he made a big impression, reaching the semi-finals and only losing there to Novak Djokovic. A great success, but a one-off. He only made it past the 2nd round of London a second time in 2023
My Shapovalov Altmaier tip
Daniel Altmaier didn’t get an easy opponent in his 2nd round, but Denis Shapovalov is by no means unbeatable. Or is the decisive factor who left how much energy at the start?
The German had to go into five sets, but held his nerve here. Shapovalov, on the other hand, was through in three. So in terms of a bet, I’m inevitably going to end up with a close match, so my prediction is:
Altmaier wins at least one set!
