Freiburg Form & Balance Check
SC Freiburg continued their consistently strong performance in the previous season and once again finished the season in fifth place. A special highlight for SCF fans was undoubtedly the round of 16 of the Europa League, in which the Breisgauer met Juventus Turin. To kick off the new European season, the Breisgauers last won against Piraeus with 3:2.
In the league, however, the SCF has been rather sluggish so far. After two narrow victories against Hoffenheim and Bremen, the team lost two games in a row. The previous week, however, the Breisgau side drew 0-0 in Frankfurt’s Stadtwald, which lifted them back up to ninth place.
Streich likes Augsburg
Christian Streich is one of the best-known coaches in German professional football and is the longest-serving coach in the German top flight after Frank Schmidt of Heidenheim. The 58-year-old also has a very special relationship with the upcoming opponents from the Fuggerstadt.
Streich began his Bundesliga coaching career with a 1-0 win over Augsburg on 21 January 2012, and the coach has also celebrated eleven Bundesliga victories against FCA, more than against any other club. On Sunday, the Weil am Rhein-born coach would now love to celebrate his twelfth win against the Fuggerstädter.
Freiburg facts & analysis
- In ninth place in the Bundesliga table
- Played 0-0 against Frankfurt in their last match
- Only three home defeats in the league in pre-season
Augsburg form & balance check
Augsburg FC finished between 12th and 15th in ten of their twelve seasons in the German top flight, including the last eight seasons in a row. Accordingly, it was no great surprise that the Fuggestädter finished 15th in the past season.
In the new season, the Augsburg team under coach Enrico Maaßen would like to get out of the familiar league region and attack further up the table. In terms of football, however, the Fuggerstädter have not been very convincing so far. At least FCA scored their first win of the season against Mainz the previous week and are now in twelfth place with five points from the same number of games.
Demirovic leads the way
A fundamental factor for the Fuggerstadters has been Ermedin Demirovic since last season. The Bosnian was therefore not without reason named captain of Augsburg before this season. And this season he seems to be taking his captaincy very seriously. On the one hand, the 25-year-old is a leader on the field, but the offensive man also leads the FCA goalscorer and assist list with three goals and assists each so far.
In addition, the Hamburg native knows the upcoming opponent very well. Ermedin Demirovic made the leap from Freiburg to Augsburg in the summer of 2022. The striker scored seven goals in 61 Bundesliga games during his time at SC. In his two seasons at the Lech, the attacker has already scored eleven goals.
Augsburg facts & analysis
- Won 2:1 against Mainz in the previous week
- In twelfth place in the Bundesliga
- Still without a point away from home
Predicted line-up – last update on 30 September 2023
With Freiburg, we expect a 3-4-3 again on Sunday, with Nicolas Höfler still missing for the Breisgauer in central midfield after his sending off against Dortmund. Gregoritsch, Günter and Kyereh are also missing for the SCF due to injury.
At FCA, we also expect a three-man backline again. In the centre of midfield, however, coach Maaßen will have to do without Arne Engels, who was sent off against Mainz the previous week. Oxford, Framberger and Okugawa are also missing due to injury.
