The last match of the season will be played on Friday evening in the Bundesliga. And the first duel on the 33rd matchday really has it all. SC Freiburg will welcome their neighbours from Wolfsburg. The hosts from Breisgau are desperate to win the last two games in order to have at least a small chance of qualifying for the Champions League. However, after the recent defeats against Leipzig and Union, SCF will enter the final two matchdays three points behind the top 4.

The good thing from Freiburg’s point of view, however, is that SCF can no longer be knocked out of fifth place. The Breisgauers are already seven points ahead of sixth place. The Wernigerode native has been active for SC Freiburg since 2015 and is particularly known for his role as an extremely effective substitute. With 33 goals as a wild card, he still holds the record in the Bundesliga. So far this season, however, the attacker has not managed to score a goal.

For a long time, it didn’t look like VfL Wolfsburg would be active at international level next season. For the first 31 match days, VfL never finished among the top six teams in the Bundesliga. But the 2-1 win against Hoffenheim the previous week then catapulted the Wolves into the safe international places for the first time.

Wolfsburg seem to be reaching their top form just in time. The Wolves won three of their last four Bundesliga games and thus climbed from ninth to sixth place at this point. Before the last two games, however, the Lower Saxons have only a razor-thin lead over the competition. Leverkusen are currently level on points with the Lower Saxons and only have a goal difference that is one goal worse.

For almost the entire season, VfL Wolfsburg operated with a back four under coach Niko Kovac. For three games now, however, the three-man backline has been set at VfL. This is particularly surprising as the Wolves currently only have two trained centre-backs at their disposal, Micky van de Ven and Sebastiaan Bornauw.

The third position in central defence is currently occupied by Josuha Guilavogui. The 32-year-old is doing a solid job and brings a lot of experience with him. Maximilian Arnold, who occupies the central midfield position, is also extremely important for the system.

Although SCF have often operated with a three-man backline recently, we expect the Breisgauer to play in a 4-4-2 again on Friday. It will be the last game in front of a home crowd for long-time Freiburg striker Nils Petersen. Therefore, we expect the 34-year-old to be in the starting eleven against Wolfsburg.

On the other side, we expect VfL Wolfsburg to play in a 3-1-4-2 again, with Luca Waldschmidt’s goal the previous week earning him a starting berth against his former club. Lacroix, Otávio and Lukas Nmecha are still injured for the Wolves.
