Bayern Munich – Schalke 04

The Bundesliga goes this weekend already into the 32nd matchday. In all parts of the republic, there are again a lot of exciting games in the German Oberhaus. In Munich, too, fans can expect a hot duel. The clash between Bayern Munich and Schalke 04 is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at the Allianz Arena. The hosts go into the game as the league leaders.

For FC Bayern Munich, this is a pleasing fact on a historical level. In 28 of the 29 cases in which the record champion was top of the table after the 31st matchday, the team from the Bavarian capital also secured the German championship title at the end of the season. Only in the 1992/93 season did Bayern have to settle for the runner-up spot, as Werder Bremen still won the championship at that time.

Against those same Bremen, the FCB took another step towards the championship title the previous week. The Bavarians won 2-1 on the Weser and thus kept BVB one point behind them. Dortmund’s local rivals from Gelsenkirchen also celebrated an important victory in the previous week. The Knappen won spectacularly 3:2 in Mainz and thus gained some breathing room in the relegation battle. The Königsblauen now go into the final three games with a two-point lead over the relegation zone. Bayern form & balance check

Bayern fans will have been painfully following the semi-final matches in the Royal League and the DFB Cup in recent weeks. Because for the FCB, it was already over in the quarterfinals in both competitions this year. And in the Bundesliga, Bayern has not yet secured the championship title in May.

The 2014 World Cup winner has played 24 games for Munich so far this Bundesliga season, contributing six goals and seven assists. However, the Munich number 25 has only been on the pitch for 51% of all minutes played. Recently, there have been increasing rumors about a departure of Müller after the season. The striker would probably prefer to say goodbye with his twelfth championship title.

Schalke form & balance check

The preliminary round of FC Schalke 04 was one big disaster. In 17 games, the Knappen picked up only a meager nine points and seemed to many fans to already be certain relegation. In fact, it was only two points less than in the relegation season 2020/2021. But in the second half of the season, the team of coach Thomas Reis shows a different face.

With 21 points already, Schalke has scored more than twice as many points in the second half of the season as in the entire first half. The Knappen also showed impressive morale in their last match against Mainz, conceding twice and still winning 3:2. As a result, Schalke is now in 15th place and has two points on Stuttgart and Bochum below them.

Bülter loves it late

Marius Bülter scored the decisive goal in the twelfth minute of stoppage time again a week ago. Schalke’s number 11 has now converted a penalty kick in injury time three times this season, which is a new record in the Bundesliga. The 30-year-old striker has already scored eleven goals in 31 games, making him his team’s top scorer.

His performance in the second half of the season was particularly impressive, as he contributed eight goals alone. This season has thus been Bülter’s most successful in the Bundesliga to date. In the 2019/2020 season, he scored seven goals, then still in the Union Berlin jersey. The Schalkers are also pinning their hopes on Bülter’s scoring instinct in Munich.

The Munich side will not rotate much. Leon Goretzka returns to the team after his yellow suspension, displacing Ryan Gravenberch back to the bench. Otherwise, we expect the same team as last time in Bremen.

Schalke will again go into the game in the well-rehearsed system 4-2-3-1. However, the Knappen will still have to do without Moritz Jenz in central defense. In addition, Ralf Fährmann is still out of action in the box.
