RB Leipzig – Union Berlin
The coming weekend in the Bundesliga is in the starting blocks and the fans can once again look forward to exciting games. Among other things, the top match between the Red Bulls from Leipzig and Union is on the agenda for Matchday 20. Both teams have presented themselves very strongly in recent weeks and both want to continue to defend their role as Bayern chasers. Find out who we think will come out on top in our Leipzig – Union tip.
A look at the Bundesliga table will naturally please both teams. The Red Bulls had to settle for just one point last weekend in a 0-0 draw against Cologne, but the Saxons have been playing very successful football in recent weeks and months. Currently, RB is in fourth place in the table and the gap to the top of the table is only four points. The upcoming opponents from Berlin are Bayern’s number one chasers with their 39 points and the men from the Alte Försterei have four wins in a row to show for it.

Leipzig Form & Balance Check
Leipzig know what a tough and above all hard opponent awaits them next Saturday. However, coach Marco Rose’s men do not need to hide, as the Saxons have gone an incredible 20 games without defeat. At the latest since the change of coach from Domenico Tedesco to Marco Rose, things have been going much better for the reigning cup winners.
The Saxons have won three of their last five league games. On the last matchday, however, RB had to settle for a 0-0 draw against Cologne. Especially in the last third, the Saxons lacked the necessary effectiveness. In games like this, it becomes clear how much RB misses Christopher Nkunku. Fortunately for the fans, the Frenchman trained with the team again during the week.
Fearful opponents Union Berlin
If we take a closer look at recent performances against the Berliners, there is not much to be said for a win on Saturday from the Saxons’ point of view. Against no other team in the league, RB has such a long negative run as against the men from the Alte Försterei. The Leipzigers have lost their last four games in the league.
Union won the first leg 2-1 thanks to merciless effectiveness. Leipzig also has the Berliners to thank for its last home defeat. In April 2022, the Red Bulls suffered their last Bundesliga home defeat to date when they lost 1:2.
Leipzig facts & analysis
– 12 Bundesliga games in a row without defeat.
– Last only 0:0 against Cologne
– In 4th place
Union Form & Balance Check
We can’t praise Union Berlin to the skies as much as they actually deserve. The Berliners are once again playing an incredible season and coach Urs Fischer’s team finds itself in second place after 19 matchdays with 39 points, just one point behind the great FC Bayern. Union have made an incredibly good start to the new year, winning all of their first four games.
On Saturday, for example, there was a close but, all things considered, well-deserved 2-1 victory over FSV Mainz 05. On top of that, Union also advanced to the quarter-finals of the cup after beating VfL Wolfsburg.
Does the series against RB continue?
The fans of the Eisernen will be pleased that it is once again to Leipzig on Saturday. The club from Köpenick has won its last four BL games against the Red Bulls and there is not really much to suggest at the moment that this series will end on Saturday at 18:30. Coach Urs Fischer can draw on a full complement of players and all the important players are on board. Berlin’s last defeat dates back to November, when they lost 4-1 to SC Freiburg. Since then, we have seen a completely different Union Berlin
Union facts & analysis
– First 5 games won 2023.
– Currently in 2nd place
– Last won 2-1 against Mainz
Predicted line-up – last update on 9 February 2023
Leipzig are likely to field a 4-4-2 in the upcoming match. It is still questionable whether defender Orban will be available. The Hungarian will probably be absent due to a stem cell donation. Instead, Simakan could move into the centre alongside Gvardiol. In attack, coach Rose will again rely on Werner and Silva. Behrens, who has been playing very well lately, will play next to Becker in the attack. There won’t be any big surprises for the Berliners on Saturday.
