Freiburg Form & Balance Check
Having started the new year as second in the table, coach Christian Streich’s men still feel like they are on winter break. From the first four games of the year, the Freiburg team only managed one win (3:1 against Augsburg). Otherwise, they have suffered some very harsh defeats, especially away from home. In Wolfsburg, the Sport-Club was defeated 0:6. In addition, there was a draw against Eintracht Frankfurt and the 1:5 defeat in Dortmund last weekend.
Due to the early red card, the defeat was only a matter of time in the end. Freiburg did not manage to close the spaces when they were shorthanded and thus BVB had an easy game in the end. Against Stuttgart, all Freiburg fans expect a significant improvement in performance.
Stuttgart welcome guest
Freiburg’s problems in recent weeks have been more in their away games. At home, Sport-Club have picked up four points this year and if we take a closer look at their record against VfB Stuttgart, there is a lot to suggest that they will pick up the next points. SCF has now gone seven games without defeat against the Swabians.
In this period, there have been two draws and five victories for the Sport-Club. From Freiburg’s point of view, it gets even better. The Breisgauers have won all of their last five games against VfB. The SCF’s great strength this season is its defence. With eight games to nil so far, the Freiburgers are at the top of the league in this statistic.
Freiburg facts & analysis

– Last lost 1:5 against Dortmund
– Already played 8 times to nil
Stuttgart form & balance check
Bruno Labbadia knew what he was getting into in what is now his second spell in charge of VfB Stuttgart – we have to be that honest. The Swabians will be trembling to stay in the relegation zone until the last matchday. With 16 points after 16 games, Stuttgart are up to their necks in the relegation battle and last Sunday’s 0:2 against Bremen in particular made it clear where the problems lie. With 22 goals, the Swabians have the third weakest offensive in the league, ahead of Hertha and Schalke.
Just how bad things really are for the Swabians is also shown by their tally after 19 matchdays. The three wins at this point of the season are the weakest in VfB’s history. At the moment, there is truly not much that could give hope of three points against Freiburg.
Away always supplier of points
It doesn’t only take points at home to stay in the league. They also need to get the necessary points away from home, something VfB Stuttgart is really miles away from this season. The bare figures speak volumes, as the Swabians have not won a game away from home for a staggering 19 games this season. The last away win came on 11 December 2021 with a 2-0 win in Wolfsburg. The Swabians have also never won anything in Freiburg in recent years. Mario Gomez’s brace in 2018 ensured the last three points for the southern Baden side.
Stuttgart facts & analysis
– 16 points after 19 games
– Last lost 0:2 against Bremen
– No win in 19 away games
Predicted line-up – last update on 9 February 2023
Two people were sent off for Freiburg against Dortmund. Firstly, right-back Sildillia had to take a shower after less than 20 minutes and coach Streich also had to go. For Sildillia, Kübler will defend at right back. Otherwise, there are no big changes for Freiburg. Gregoritsch will again play as the only top player at the front. Freiburg could also play in a 4-3-3. In that case, Doan and Grifo would move to the outside.
The upcoming opponents from Stuttgart will play in a 4-3-3 on Saturday. The Swabians will be happy about the return of Sosa. The Croatian will play at left back again. In attack, coach Labbadia relies on Silas, Pfeiffer and Führich.
