Schalke 04 vs. FSV Mainz
Fc Schalke 04 is probably the only Bundesliga team looking forward to the break due to the World Cup starting very soon. But until that happens, Gelsenkirchen has to play even twice more. The emphasis is on must, because at the moment it simply doesn’t look like Königsblau wants to play football. New coach Thomas Reis has not changed this attitude either. Although the Königsblauen are now fighting more and at times presenting a courageous picture, the promoted team lost both games under Reis, most recently on Sunday in Bremen with 1:2. Now the Knappen await 1. FSV Mainz 05 at the Veltins-Arena on Wednesday.
The Nullfünfer are also currently in a downward spiral in the Bundesliga. After coach Bo Svensson’s team had celebrated two victories in a row, FSV went down to the record champions in Munich with 2:6. Last Saturday at home against Wolfsburg, the next 90 minutes ended in a clear 3-0 defeat. On Wednesday, Mainz will try to get back on track at the bottom of the table. Find out whether they will succeed in our Schalke – Mainz betting tip.

Schalke Form & Balance Check
It was logical that FC Schalke 04 decided to part ways with coach Frank Kramer, not only in view of the points haul but also because of the defensive style of play. But whether Thomas Reis will now be the bringer of success for Königsblau can hardly be assessed after only two appearances. It should be said, however, that sporting director Rouven Schröder gave up his job because he did not consider Reis to be the right successor and his superior Peter Knäbel decided over his head.
After the two games under Reis, there are still only six points on the balance sheet. However, the Knappen had collected all of these under predecessor Kramer. The new manager’s debut saw the promoted team lose 0:2 against Freiburg, before Gelsenkirchen also lost 1-2 in Bremen last Saturday. Drexler scored the consolation goal one minute before the end.
What has changed?
Looking at the results under Reis, Schalke conceded two goals in each of the two appearances and thus continue to confirm their average of 2.3 goals conceded per game. Against Bremen, however, the first traits of the new 4-2-3-1 system were already visible. The Knappen feel new confidence and now act more offensively. In addition, Königsblau had 55% of the ball at the Weser and also won 55% more duels. In addition, Schalke scored three times on the opponent’s goal. Schalke also fired three shots on goal against Freiburg. It will take time, but the promoted team is already showing good signs under Reis.
Schalke facts & analysis
– Schalke are in 18th place in the table with 6 points.
– Königsblau have lost 8 competitive matches in a row
– Last time the Knappen lost with 1:2 in Bremen
Mainz Form & Balance Check
Little went right for 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the last two matchdays of the Bundesliga. After two wins in a row, which the Nullfünfer achieved with 2-0 in Bremen and with a brilliant 5-0 home win over Cologne, the self-confidence was very high before the duel with FC Bayern. Perhaps too much so, as FSV acted somewhat overconfidently at the record champions and promptly conceded six goals. However, coach Bo Svensson’s team also scored twice against Bayern and also missed a penalty kick. Last Saturday, however, nothing went right against Wolfsburg. The Nullfünfer lost 0:3. All three of the Wolves’ shots on goal went in, whereas none of the Mainzers’ shots ended up in the VfL box.
Confidence in away record
Mainz 05 have now lost two games in a row, but can hope for a turnaround at Schalke not only because it is against the last team in the table, but also because of their own away strength. The Nullfünfer have won four of their five games this season on away soil. Before FSV lost 6-2 in Munich, Mainz won 2-0 in Bremen. Out of seven away games, coach Svensson’s team only lost in Freiburg and at FC Bayern. In addition, Mainz scored eleven of their 18 goals in the season away from home. In the away table, 1. FSV Mainz is in 4th place. However, FSV have not won at the Veltins-Arena for ten years.
Mainz facts & analysis
– Mainz are in 10th place in the table with 18 points.
– FSV lost 2 games in a row (2:6 and 0:3)
– The Nullfünfer have already won four times away
Predicted line-up – last update on 7 November 2022
Since Thomas Reis has been in charge on the Königsblau touchline, Schalke have played in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Reis already tried this during his time in Bochum and was relatively very successful with the approach via an offensive wing play. It remains to be seen whether Terodde or Polter will play up front. In that respect, it is certain that Kaminski (torn calf), Ouwejan (knee ligament injury), Zalazar (broken metatarsal), van den Berg (torn ankle ligament), Cisse (torn muscle fibre) and Greiml (meniscus injury) are out injured.
Mainz also have two players out with Leitsch (fatigue symptoms) and Mustapha (muscle contusion in the thigh). Coach Svensson expects the Nullfünfer to play in a 3-4-2-1 system with an offensive trio consisting of Burkardt, Onisiwo and Ingvartsen. Widmer and Aaron will provide the track players on the outside positions.
