Manchester City vs. Manchester United

Derby Time in the Premier League! This Sunday evening, one of the many rivalry duels will take place in England’s top division – league leaders Manchester City will host fourth-placed Manchester United. The match will kick off at the Etihad Stadium at 18:30.

After winning the first leg at Old Trafford (0:2), the Citizens could win both players in a season against their city rivals for only the second time under Pep Guardiola’s management. So far, this has only been achieved in the 2018/19 season, also then the away game at the Red Devils was won 2-0. However, for once, the Citizens have not been convincing in recent games, so we can expect an exciting game on Sunday.

Who do we see as the winner and what other predictions we would make on the upcoming Manchester derby, tells you now our Man City vs Man United tip.

Man City – Man United Info

 – Date & Time: 06.03.2022, 17:30 Uhr
 – Venue: Etihad Stadium (Manchester)
 – Competition: Premier League, Matchday 28
 – TV broadcast: Sky Sport

Man City Form & Balance Check

After an incredible run and 12 Premier League wins in a row, the Citizens have also dropped a point or two since the turn of the year, which has actually added some excitement to the English championship. With Liverpool having won all of their last six games, the Citizens’ lead over second place has shrunk to six points.

In addition, it should not be forgotten that the Reds even have a game up their sleeve. Should City slip up in the derby on Sunday, the cards could be reshuffled again in the battle for the title.

Citizens must improve again

After a convincing 5-0 first leg win at Sporting Lisbon in the last 16 of the Champions League, Pep Guardiola’s team first lost 3-2 at home to Tottenham Hotspur, who had previously been in serious crisis. The following away match at Everton FC was won 1-0 thanks to Phil Foden’s late goal (82nd minute).

In the FA Cup match against the last-placed team in the English 2nd division Peterborough (2-0 away win), the Citizens did not cover themselves with glory last Tuesday, but at least they solved the compulsory task. Against Manchester United, however, the Skyblues will have to step it up a notch if they want to keep Liverpool FC at arm’s length.

Man City facts & analysis

 – 66 points from 27 games.
 – Most recent 1-0 win at Everton FC
 – 2 of 3 Premier League defeats conceded at home
 – Lost last 3 home games against Man United

Man United Form & Balance Check

Manchester United will have to be extremely careful in the remainder of the season not to miss out on Champions League qualification. The Red Devils currently occupy fourth place with 47 points, but West Ham United (45), Arsenal (45) and Tottenham (42) are lurking just behind them.

The Gunners are currently three games behind, so they would only need to win one of three games to overtake United in the table. With United facing a tough schedule in the coming weeks (Man City, Tottenham, Liverpool, Leicester), things could get really tight for Ralf Rangnick’s team.

4th away win in a row at the Citizens?

The performances of the last few weeks do not indicate that the Red Devils will be able to improve significantly during the rest of the season. The attacking play in particular is simply too harmless. At Watford FC last weekend, CR7 & Co. could not get beyond a goalless 0:0. The previous duels with Brighton (2:0) and Leeds United (4:2) were won, but without really convincing.

Before that, there were two 1-1 draws at Burnley FC and against Southampton FC. There is hope for the away game at Man City, however, as United have won all three of their last three games at the Citizens, although their form at those times was not exactly exhilarating either.

Man United facts & analysis

 – 47 points from 27 games.
 – Last played 0-0 at Watford
 – Unbeaten for 8 league games
 – Not lost any of last 7 away games

Predicted line-up – last updated 4 March 2022

Both teams will field their best possible eleven. Man City’s Champions League clash with Sporting Lisbon has already been decided after a 5-0 first leg win, while United’s second leg against Atlético Madrid is not until the following week. There are hardly any injury problems on either side. Only Edinson Cavani (groin problem) and Scott McTominay (illness) are expected to miss out. Instead of Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelöf, Alex Telles and Harry Maguire could also play. Jadon Sancho could also replace youngster Anthony Elanga. On the Citizens’ side, Pep Guardiola could well cause a surprise or two again.

Man City – Man United direct comparison & stats

The long direct comparison is narrowly in favour of Manchester United, with 63 wins to 49 and 48 draws. After the Citizens have been catching up in recent years, United have been able to hold their own decently again recently. Of the last five meetings, both teams have won two, with the remaining match ending in a goalless draw. Curiously, all four victories in this period have come by 2-0 scores. The away team has always won the last three meetings 2-0, most recently Man City in the first leg thanks to an own goal by Eric Bailly (7th) and Bernardo Silva’s goal (45th).

 – The comparisons between the two clubs last season: 0-2 (home to Manchester City) and 0-0 (home to Manchester United).
 – The winner of the last encounter was Manchester City.
 – Manchester United have not lost any of their last 9 away matches.
 – Manchester City have scored in each of their last 24 matches.
 – Goals should come today: Manchester United have scored in each of their 13 away games in the Premier League this season.
