FC Augsburg vs. Borussia Dortmund
In the second Sunday match of the Bundesliga, FC Augsburg and Borussia Dortmund close the 24th matchday. Both teams are in mixed form and urgently need to score, even though BVB are of course clear favourites. Nevertheless, the Fuggerstädter have been able to annoy Borussia every now and then in recent years, and perhaps they will be able to do so again this weekend. Augsburg are not in a very rosy situation in the relegation battle. Only 22 points from 23 games are currently enough for a relegation spot, while Stuttgart are only three points behind them. BVB, on the other hand, has nothing whatsoever to do with relegation, but wants to defend its hard-won second place. In the best case scenario, Dortmund can even put some pressure on Bayern again, the gap to the league leader is currently six points.

Augsburg once again can’t find their way out of the cellar. Not infrequently, the Fuggerstädter have shown good approaches this season, only to fall back into old patterns a little later. FCA promptly won their fourth game of the season and Gregoritsch has now scored an impressive six goals. The Austrian, who had almost been discarded, is now the Augsburg team’s top scorer.

Dortmund form & balance check
BVB suffered the next setback during the week. After the elimination in the DFB Cup and the Champions League, the Europa League is now also over, the Glasgow Rangers turned out to be a stumbling block. The first leg in Dortmund went to the Scots with 2:4, in the return match on Thursday Borussia could not get beyond a 2:2. This means that BVB can fully concentrate on the league. But that will probably not be much consolation for Marco Rose and his team, especially as it leaves them well below expectations.
BVB must show a reaction again
The elimination against Rangers was another indication of Dortmund’s major weakness this season: their inconsistency. In recent weeks, the form curve of the black-and-yellows has once again been on a rollercoaster, and BVB has not been able to string two wins together since the beginning of the year. However, you have to give Dortmund credit for having responded to each of the last three defeats with a win. After the defeat in the first leg against Rangers, the BVB finished off Gladbach 6-0 last Sunday. Ausburg coach Markus Weinzierl will have to do without the longer injured Strobl and Gumny as well as the yellow suspended Hahn. In the 4-4-2 system, Caligiuri would actually be the first option as a replacement, but the veteran has not been allowed to play a minute in the last five games. Offensive alternatives would otherwise be Zeqiri or Pepi, but a variant with a five-man backline is also conceivable.
The BVB’s medical staff just won’t clear up. The already injured Akanji, Reyna and Zagadou were joined by Guerreiro, Reus, Meunier and Can around the match against Glasgow. Their fitness for action remains open, as does that of Haaland, who is still not pain-free.
