Australian Open today – Matches today 19.01.
The first two days at the Australian Open 2022 have been played. Some favourites have shown their early form right away, others found it a little harder to start well into the tournament.
If we look at the German players, some have surprised in a particularly positive way, but others have already started their journey home disappointed. In the night from Tuesday to Wednesday Central European Time, the second round will continue.
Whether outsiders or title favourites like Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev, the opponents will now be a little more demanding in most cases. However, failure is far from being an option for the top stars.
The German flag will have to be held high by the men anyway, because in the women’s event all the hopefuls are already out. Even Angelique Kerber has not managed to continue her successful year in 2021.
Australian Open 2022 – 19.01. Preview of Day 3
The number of matches is halved, yet the 3rd day of the Australian Open starts as usual at 01:00. And it will be with German participation, because Oscar Otte will be playing! Many will have memories of this duel, which took place at the US Open.
The match is no less exciting, as Dominik Koepfer appears on the court shortly afterwards. He is up against Reilly Opelka, a strong-serving opponent. The US-American is the clear favourite here.
This duel is followed by the second appearance of Yannick Hanfmann. As convincing as he was in his first round, he now faces Rafael Nadal, one of the best! Hardly anyone expects a surprise here.
For Alexander Zverev, the 1st round was almost more exhausting than expected, but will John Millman make it easier for him than Daniel Altmaier? Zverev wants to win the Australian Open, so the local hero must not be a stumbling block.
While Angelique Kerber is already out, Olympic champion Belinda Bencic is hoping for a successful tournament. After her commanding opening victory, Amanda Anisimova is now waiting for the Swiss player.

Australian Open today 19.01: Oscar Otte – Lorenzo Sonego (01:00 h)
Four tiebreaks and in the end a 3:1 for the German – the fans experienced this thriller a few months ago at the US Open when Oscar Otte won against Lorenzo Sonego in the 1st round. As a qualifier, the German then stormed into the last 16, where he narrowly and injuredly failed to reach Matteo Berrettini.
This time, he was allowed to spare himself the qualifying, showing a very confident 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 in round 1 against Tseng. In the preparation tournaments, he had still shown very close results, but this time, he had everything under control.
In his first ever AO main draw appearance, he has already achieved his best result. Sonego has started the tournament just as easily with a 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 win over Sam Querrey.
He wants revenge for the defeat at the US Open, Further than Round 2? He has never done that here in Melbourne! At 1.40 to 3.20, he has at least grabbed the favourite role against Otte.
Our expert tip: Over 3.5 sets
Australian Open today 19.01: Reilly Opelka – Dominik Koepfer (02:20 h)
How will Dominik Koepfer keep 2.11m of concentrated serving power at bay? In his 2nd round against Reilly Opelka, the German is the underdog, almost a 3.00 would carry his win.
In his 1st round against Carlos Taberner, he hardly afforded any carelessness, winning 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the end. He only offered his opponent four break chances, and that’s all it should be against Opelka.
His big plus: He won all three duels against the US-American! Hard court, grass and clay, he didn’t drop a single set against the reigning world number 29. A 3rd round in Melbourne would be absolutely new territory for Koepfer.
Opelka won his 1st round match against Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-4, 7-6, hitting his usual 23 aces. For him, too: Round 3 at the Australian Open? That has never happened before!
Our expert tip: Over 40.5 Games
Australian Open today 19.01: Yannick Hanfmann – Rafael Nadal (03:30 h)
A German qualifier with a successful Grand Slam? What happened at the US Open 2021 could also become reality in Australia. Yannick Hanfmann struggled through qualifying, then came through his 1st round with flying colours.
6-2, 6-3, 6-2 against Thanasi Kokkinakis, he showed no weaknesses. The world number 126 failed immediately to Andrey Rublev a year ago, now he gets to play his first 2nd round in Down Under.
And against none other than Rafael Nadal! The Spaniard shone against Marcor Giron, leaving no stone unturned in a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 win after a long injury layoff. He wants only his second title at the Australian Open!
Three years ago at the French Open, he met Yannick Hanfmann and beat him 6-2, 6-1, 6-3. The bookies are counting on that this time as well, with the odds showing a 21.00 to 1.01!
Our expert tip: Under 30.5 Games
Australian Open today 19.01: Alexander Zverev – John Millman (10:15am)
A smooth 3:0 despite two tiebreaks – Alexander Zverev could have saved himself a little more energy in his victory over Daniel Altmaier, but the Olympic champion was nevertheless satisfied with his opener.
The six aces in particular must have bothered the world No. 3. Dominic Thiem and Novak Djokovic kept him from reaching the final in the last two years, and that cannot happen to him in 2022.
John Millman, an opponent he has already beaten twice, now awaits. In 2019 in a five-set thriller at the French Open, in 2020 in three sets in Cologne. So there has not yet been an outright victory, but the odds are still clear at 1.05 to 10.00.
His opponent won 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 against Feliciano Lopez. Unbelievable: Millman had 21 break chances, but only used six of them. In 2020 he was already underestimated once, so he threw out Ugo Humbert and Hubert Hurkacz!
Our expert tip: Over 29.5 Games
Australian Open today 19.01.: Belinda Bencic – Amanda Anisimova (04:15 h)
What can the Olympic champion do at the Australian Open? Belinda Bencic started the tournament with a very commanding 6-4, 6-3 win over Kristina Mladenovic. She was already in good form in Sydney, losing by a razor-thin margin to Paula Badosa in the quarter-finals.
The Spaniard is one of the favourites for the title in Down Under. For the past three years, Bencic has been eliminated in the 3rd round at the AO, only once has she advanced to the last 16. In 2019, she met Amanda Anisimova for the first time and only once before.
Won 6-2, 6-2 in that clash, can she be successful again on Wednesday? The American had a little more trouble in her 1st round match, winning in the end 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 against Arianne Hartono from the Netherlands.
A few days ago, she secured the Gippsland Trophy, beating Daria Kasatkina and Sorana Cirstea among others. The 20-year-old did not compete in Melbourne in 2021. Whether it was a first-round exit in 2020 or the round of 16 in 2019, she has already experienced a lot here.
Our expert tip: Victory Bencic
