US Open in New York, Round of 16, Tuesday, 05.09.2023

Staying up late will pay off on Monday night! At the US Open, it comes to the top duel between Alexander Zverev and Jannik Sinner in the round of 16.

The reigning Olympic champion has won the last three duels against the Italian. Why the betting companies still classify him as a slight underdog, I reveal in my Zverev Sinner tip.

Zverev can confirm his good form at the US Open. In Cincinnati, he already made it to the semifinals before the eventual triumphant Novak Djokovic (7-6, 7-5) gave him the Masters exit in a close match.

In the same tournament, he also finally managed the long-awaited success against a top-10 player, his first since his multiple ligament rupture, which he suffered at the French Open in 2022.

He defeated Daniil Medvedev in three sets. The Russian, against whom he had already missed match points at the Masters in Monaco earlier in the year.

At the US Open, he first took out Aleksandar Vukic (6-4, 6-4, 6-4) in three straight sets. More complicated, however, were the matches against compatriot Daniel Altmaier (7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3) and Grigor Dimitrov (6-7, 7-6, 6-1, 6-1).

The Bulgarian even had a chance to go 2-0 up, but the Hamburg native fought back and gave him no more chances in sets three and four.

A much higher hurdle now awaits with Sinner (1.61). Bet365 sees the Masters champion from Toronto slightly ahead of Zverev (2.30).

The odds already reveal that it should be a very close match. We will most likely not see a winner without losing a set.

Therefore, the bet “Over 38.5 games” from Bet-at-home offers itself. The odds are surprisingly high at 1.75. The 2.75 odds for exactly five sets is also worth considering.

It should be a match of equals, with alternating strong phases of the players. Already the last duel in Monaco, which Zverev won, dragged on 5-7, 6-3, 7-6.

For the German it was the third win in a row against Sinner. He also won their first US Open round of 16 encounter in 2021 (6-4, 6-4, 7-6) and in Cologne 2020 (7-6, 6-3).

Sinner, on the other hand, kept the upper hand on debut, winning the French Open round of 16 after four rounds: 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

In three of the four matches at least one tiebreak was played. In addition, the German has had four tiebreaks in his last four matches. Bet365 has a 1.53 on offer for over 0.5 tiebreaks.

Sinner, on the other hand, was able to save the complete set length at the US Open. Except for a rough start against tennis icon Stan Wawrinka, he dominated his opponents.

Yannick Hanfmann (6-3, 6-1, 6-1) and Lorenzo Sonego (6-4, 6-2, 6-4) were chased off the court in a hurry. Only Wawrinka was able to take service games from him, but in the end he also had to pay tribute to the strong Sinner defense: 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

My Zverev Sinner Tip

Zverev and Sinner are in strong form. As a Toronto champion, outstanding hard court player and currently even more consistent player, bettors see Sinner ahead.

I see the two pros on an equal footing, and even advantages for Germany’s number one if they play to their maximum potential. It’s clear to me that this tidbit on Monday night shouldn’t be over too quickly.

My Zverev Sinner tip: Over 38.5 games.
