Wimbledon 2023, Final, Saturday, 15/07/2023
One was expected, the other not at all! On Saturday, the women’s grand final will take place at Wimbledon, and neither player has won any trophies at Grand Slam level so far.
Tension, nervousness, concentration and class of play, a number of factors will decide who will walk off the court as the winner. Perhaps the current Betano favourite could have the advantage of having been in the final in 2023?
In any case, in my Jabeur Vondrousouva tip I will now report in detail what kind of match I expect. My betting recommendation is clear: after last year’s defeat, the Tunisian will finally be able to cheer in 2023!
It was almost exactly a year ago that Ons Jabeur experienced her most beautiful and most painful moment of her career. She lost the final at Wimbledon in three sets to Elena Rybakina and promised her fans: “We’ll see each other again soon.
The Tunisian obviously took this “soon” literally, because she actually made it to the final again! She could hardly have more motivation now, because she wants to make a whole continent proud.
Lost sets? They don’t bother her anymore. She won against Magdalena Frech (6-3, 6-3) and Bai Zhuoxuan (6-1, 6-1) without any problems, then she beat Bianca Andreescu 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 after trailing. After that, she managed to pull off the first really big surprise in the last 16.
She put on a show of power against Petra Kvitova, winning 6-0, 6-3 in less than 60 minutes. Buoyed by this success, she tackled her last two tasks before the final, and they were tough!
First up was Elena Rybakina, the woman who had stopped her from triumphing at Wimbledon in 2022. Jabeur lost the first set in a tiebreak, but did not let that unsettle her at all.
6-4, 6-1, she became stronger with every rally and took revenge for what was probably the worst defeat of her sporting life. The semi-final against Aryna Sabalenka, the world number 2, was very similar, almost identical.
Once again, Jabeur fell behind 6-7, but then snatched a 6-4, 6-3 and was completely deserved to cheer. Three times the Tunisian came back from 0:1 down in sets and was not to be beaten.
She only broke Sabalenka and Rybakina together three times, a really strong performance. Now Jabeur has to show that she has her nerves under control. Last year she lost both in London and New York, so it’s finally time for her first title.
In any case, the 28-year-old is already the favourite, I see odds of 1.45 to 2.80 with our betting providers, also because Marketa Vondrousouva, as the world number 42, was really not among the top favourites.
The Czech had surprisingly appeared in the final of the French Open in 2019, it was the only Grand Slam in which she had even made it past the last 16. However, the 24-year-old certainly didn’t get to this final on the luck of the draw alone.
After her 6-2, 7-5 win over Peyton Stearns in the opener, she eliminated the first strong opponent from the Top 15 with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Weronika Kudermetova. Not everyone expected her to beat Donna Vekic 6-1, 7-5.
Against her compatriot Marie Bouzkova, Vondrousouva dropped her first set at 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, and in the quarter-finals against Jessica Pegula she entered as an outsider. A role that obviously suits the Czech very well.
6-4, 2-6, 6-4, she has never been better on grass! In the semi-finals, she showed that she can also cope well with the role of the favourite. Against Elina Svitolina, who had previously eliminated Iga Swiatek, Vondrousouva won 6-3, 6-3.
She gave her last three opponents a whopping 28 break chances, and she will probably not be allowed to do that against Jabeur. Speaking of which, do they know what it’s like to play against each other?
Definitely yes, because we have already seen this duel six times. And how could it be otherwise before a big final, the score is 3:3, so that no favourite can be deduced from this!
Australian Open and Indian Wells, the Czech won both matches this year. It is also interesting to note that the most recent four encounters have never featured less than 22.5 games.
Marketa Vondrousouva’s entry into the final came as a surprise, but the results showed that the triumph is by no means undeserved! In the final, however, she is not only the underdog with the bookmakers, but also in my analysis.
Ons Jabeur, in the Wimbledon final for the second time in a row, is desperate to win the title and is among the top two players at a Grand Slam for the third time in a complete year.
After her victories against Rybakina and Sabalenka, anything is possible for her, she is mentally extremely strong and can turn every match around. For this reason, I say it comes down to a mix of playing and nervous strength with the following tip:
Jabeur wins Wimbledon 2023!
