Germany has been waiting for years for successful new talent in women’s tennis, but will Wimbledon 2022 of all places bring the turnaround? With Jule Niemeier, someone is making a name for herself who was not necessarily expected to do so in advance.
After two outstanding victories, she is now aiming for the last 16. And lo and behold, all of a sudden she is also favoured at Bwin.

Angelique Kerber – and then? Since time immemorial, German women’s tennis has wanted a runner-up who could compete all the way to the big stage. Now three have made it to the 3rd round of Wimbledon!
Jule Niemeier was probably the least expected, as the 22-year-old had anything but luck of the draw. She got off to a flying start with a 6-1, 6-4 win over China’s Xiyu Wang, but nobody knew what was to follow.
In the second round she faced Anett Kontaveit, seeded second in London! In the first set, both were still fighting and Niemeier won 6-4. But what happened afterwards, the German could hardly believe herself.
6-0! She played Kontaveit completely against the wall, used all four break chances in the match and did not give the Estonian a single one. These are statistics that you normally only know from Iga Swiatek, the measure of all things women’s
Niemeier serves superbly, whether first or second serve, she has never shown less than 76% in this statistic. It had taken less than an hour before a top player like Anett Kontaveit had been defeated.
“Unbelievable! I am speechless. One of the biggest wins of my career. I was very nervous before but I handled it well. I love playing on grass. It suits my game,” said the world number 97 after her success.
Of course, if you beat the third best player in the rankings, you want to win even more against someone who is behind you in the world rankings. Lesia Tsurenko does exactly that, not quite making it into the top 100.
The pressure is now on Niemeier, because she is in the lead with odds of 1,60 to 2,20. While the German is only 22 years old and only making her second appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam after the French Open, Tsurenko is already 33.
She definitely deserves the experience. She has been competing at Grand Slams since 2011, but has not been on court at Wimbledon since 2019. Now she has set her best result by reaching the 3rd round.
She got off to a flying start in London with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jodie Burrage and followed it up with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over compatriot Anhelina Kalinina. Not bad results, but Niemeier beat the clearly better opponents.
The Ukrainian also benefited from the fact that only three of her 17 break chances were used. Niemeier showed much more energy here. Her results in 2022 are similar to those of her German opponents, there are just no top results around 100th place.
My Tsurenko Niemeier Tip
Of course I have a bit of the German glasses on and wish Jule Niemeier a place in the last 16. But even without such sentimentalism: Whoever completely dismantles Anett Kontaveit is predestined for further great tasks.
Lesia Tsurenko has beaten much easier opponents, lost one set and is far less effective in terms of breaks. I therefore recommend what I consider to be a very obvious tip:
