Wimbledon, 2nd Round, Thursday, 30.06.2022
Is Stefanos Tsitsipas one of the favourites at Wimbledon? You always have to keep the Greek in mind, but he is not in the best form at the moment either. But in the second round he will meet a player who has made a great start.
Of course, the world number five is the favourite at Mobilebet, but his opponent has values that suggest he is an outsider.
In my Thompson Tsitsipas tip, I reveal why my betting predicts a strong Australian!
It was more a torment than a gala – Stefanos Tsitsipas didn’t necessarily recommend himself for more with an excellent performance at Wimbledon. At least he managed to avoid a third consecutive 1st round exit.
7-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 against Alexander Ritschard, a qualifier from Switzerland, not exactly the result Tsitsipas had imagined. He gave his opponent 17 break chances, but only allowed four.
The eight double faults also do not indicate that the 23-year-old is ready for his first title at a Grand Slam tournament. After his elimination in the last 16 of the French Open, he had a hard time on grass right from the start.
In Stuttgart he was eliminated in match number two against Andy Murray, in Halle he suffered the same fate against Nick Kyrgios. On Mallorca, things finally worked out better. Actually, it worked out really well, because he won the tournament!
However, you have to look more closely at the results, a 6-4, 6-4 against Benjamin Bonzi and Ilya Ivashka were already the clearest results. Tsitsipas knows: For a good result in Wimbledon, much more has to come.
One qualifier already made him sweat, whether Jordan Thompson can hurt him much more? After all, as world number 76, he is in a much better position than Alexander Ritschard!
The betting companies have also taken a close look at Tsitsipas’ performance. Of course, he is favoured going into the 2nd round, but odds of 1.18 to 4.60 show that they do have a little more confidence in his current opponent.
And why not, after all, Jordan Thompson has made a great start to this tournament. He didn’t really face a bad player in Roberto Carballes, but Thompson literally swept the Spaniard off the court.
6-4, 6-1, 6-1, with this result he should have got Tsitsipas’ attention. He allowed only one break, took seven of eleven chances himself, which is exactly how he will have to perform on Thursday.
Thompson won the Surbiton Trophy immediately after the French Open and also reached the final of the Challenger in Nottingham, which he only narrowly lost to Cameron Norrie. There is no question that he can serve really well on grass.
After failing four times in a row in the first round of Wimbledon, things went much better last year. Thompson beat Casper Ruud and Kei Nishikori, then lost narrowly to Ilya Ivashka.
Incidentally, there has only been one direct duel between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jordan Thompson, which was played three years ago in Washington. The favourite won 6-3, 7-6, but Thompson held his own.
My Thompson Tsitsipas tip
Can Stefanos Tsitsipas finally reach his full potential? The performance in the 1st round raises doubts
Jordan Thompson started brilliantly, the grass has already suited him in recent weeks. I favour Tsitsipas, but I think the Australian can trouble the top star for a long time. That’s why I’m betting:
Thompson wins at least one set
