New day, new luck! The first of three Masters on clay picks up pace again on Wednesday, moving in leaps and bounds towards the final on Easter Sunday. Some stars haven’t even entered the tournament yet!
For the best, it really starts today, and German hope Alexander Zverev will also serve for the first time. The Olympic champion has not had an easy draw and will be challenged right from the start.

How does the Indian Wells winner do on clay? Taylor Fritz came within a whisker of embarrassing himself, barely scraping out a 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 win over Lucas Catarina. The American had already failed early in Miami and Houston.
His serve is not yet as good as he would like on the slow clay, and now he will play Marin Cilic for the third time. Both players won once each, the two duels were hard-fought at three sets.
Cilic, at 1.98m even 2cm taller than his younger rival, was much smoother in his first round, although he is considered more of a green grass specialist. He dispatched Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-2, 6-1.
86% won points on first serve and no break chance granted, that should be hard to crack even for Fritz. In his last two appearances, Cilic was knocked out directly in Monte Carlo; that can’t happen to him again in 2022.

Felix Auger-Aliassime entered the Grand Prix Hassan II as a big favourite, wanting to finally break the curse of the final. But it didn’t come that far, because the Canadian already failed against Alex Molcan.
No question, he is completely out of shape. In France, he lost a final against Andrey Rublev, but then he crashed and was eliminated immediately after the first game in the last few tournaments.
The world No. 9 has dueled Lorenzo Musetti twice in the past year, both duels went to three sets and had a different winner each time. Twice 1st round, once 2nd, Monte Carlo has not been a good place for Auger-Aliassime at all so far.
Lorenzo Musetti was able to test the court in his first round against Benoit Paire. With a 6-2, 6-7, 6-2 score, no spectator was bored. The Italian, who has been mediocre in the last few tournaments, also benefited from the fact that Paire had a weak day.

Since the end of the Corona break, Andrey Rublev has been the most successful player on the ATP Tour. The Russian has already snatched two titles this year, so it was all the more surprising when he fell powerlessly to Nick Kyrgios in Round 1 in Miami.
A year ago, Rublev showed fantastic performances in Monte Carlo, beating Rafael Nadal and Casper Ruud among others. In the final, however, he was unable to do anything and was beaten by Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Speaking of being beaten, he has lost both previous duels with Alex de Minaur. Four years ago, the Australian was twice stronger. He started his Masters with a commanding 6-3, 6-4 win over Bruno Zapata Miralles.
In the last tournaments, de Minaur usually failed very early, but was also always unlucky with top-class opponents. With odds of 1.25 to 3.60, the bookmakers have nevertheless clearly sided with Andrey Rublev.

No good performances, the freak out in Acapulco – Alexander Zverev finally wants to write positive headlines again. He wants to be at the top for the first time at his home tournament, although he only likes the slow clay of Monte Carlo to a limited extent.
He has already made it to the quarter-finals in doubles, and his first singles match is scheduled for Wednesday. His opponent: Federico Delbonis. Despite odds of 1.15 to 6.50, it could be close, as the two duels so far have been hair-raising.
