Best result quarter-final, regardless of Grand Slam? Logically, Jannik Sinner is not satisfied with this result, when he has been among the absolute world’s best for a few years now!
On Tuesday, the South Tyrolean is active in exactly this round, so he has big plans. His opponent is the biggest surprise in Wimbledon so far, a player who is barely in the top 100.
It is therefore only logical that there is a clear favourite at Bet3000. In my Sinner Safiullin tip, I will now reveal why I would take the risk of betting on an outright win here!
It’s curious that Jannik Sinner seems to have neither a favourite Grand Slam nor a fear opponent. The Italian turns 22 in a few weeks and yet it feels like he has been at the top for a decade.
He is currently number 8 in the world, always plays quite well in Grand Slams, but unfortunately without the big hit. So far, however, Sinner gives the impression that he will finally be able to break through in 2023.
He started with a 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 win over Juan Manuel Cerundolo, followed by a 7-5, 6-1, 6-2 win over Diego Schwartzman. He then dropped a set for the first time in Round 3, after a 3-6 loss to Quentin Halys he turned it around to win 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.
Neither these three opponents nor the one who waited in the round of 16 are among the best: Daniel Elahi Galan. But even such opponents have to be beaten first, and Sinner did that with a 7-6, 6-4, 6-3.
The luck of the draw was very good for the South Tyrolean. Juan Manuel Cerundolo, Diego Schwartzman, Quentin Halys, Daniel Elahi Galan and Roman Safiullin? Without wanting to sound disrespectful, you couldn’t get a GS semi-final any easier!
So if Sinner has his nerves under control on Tuesday, nothing should actually go wrong in the first direct duel ever. Three times he won more than 80% of the points on the first serve, and that’s how he wants to serve in the quarter-finals as well.
With odds of 1.13 to 5.50, he goes into the match in our 2023 betting provider ranking, so he will have to withstand the pressure of being the clear favourite. For Roman Safiullin, it might be a dream come true that he gets to play the match at all.
The 25-year-old has only been on the big stage for a good two years, and his best result before Wimbledon 2023 was a second round bye. Does this make him nervous or does it mean that he simply has nothing to lose?
Safiullin is barely in the world’s top 100 and has celebrated just two victories on the fast surface in his preparation for grass. All the more surprising was what happened in the 1st round in London.
2-6, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 against Roberto Bautista-Agut! After this success, Safiullin had obviously tasted blood. He won 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 against Corentin Moutet and then celebrated a 7-6, 6-4, 6-0 win over Guido Pella.
Admittedly, opponents two and three were not among the best, similar to the competition on Jannik Sinner’s side. However, Denis Shapovalov was not a bad opponent in the round of 16.
The first set went 6-3 to the favourite, but then the Russian really got going. 6-3, 6-1, 6-3, he actually advanced another round! He only conceded two breaks in the last two rounds and has improved a lot in this respect.
My Sinner Safiullin Tip
Safiullin ended up as the first quarter-finalist, not really knowing what happened to him. The fact that he is now the underdog again in the round of the best eight will probably not bother him, because he can accept this role perfectly.
Of course, Jannik Sinner is far ahead in terms of quality, but he first has to bring that onto the court on Tuesday. For me personally, the South Tyrolean makes a very strong impression at this tournament.
For the first time ever, a semi-final beckons, which should be motivation enough. That’s why I decide to end Safiullin’s winning streak and recommend the following tip:
