It has been a successful and equally difficult year for Oscar Otte. The Cologne native has managed to step out of Alexander Zverev’s shadow and become a big player in his own right.
He has climbed to 54th place in the rankings, so the top 50 are not too far away. Especially on grass, Otte put on one gala after the other, annoyed the big names and was a permanent guest in the semi-finals.
After Wimbledon, however, a slump followed, which was due to an injury. He returned at the US Open, but was quickly eliminated by Hubert Hurkacz. Since the final Grand Slam in 2022, there has only been one more victory.
Although Otte usually leaves the court as a loser, his performance has improved significantly in recent weeks. In Nur-Sultan, he forced Marin Cilic into three sets, and in Florence, too, he was an unpleasant opponent.
Otte came back strongly to beat Marton Fucsovics 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the 1st round, then faced Felix Auger-Aliassime, seeded No. 1.
The 29-year-old engaged the world-class man in a tough match, but lost 4-6, 7-6, 2-6 in the end. He allowed his opponent ten break chances, a few months ago on grass he was much better here.
Now in Stockholm Otte will start against Elias Ymer. The two players have never met in a main draw before, but there were two qualifying encounters in 2021.
Both times were played on clay, both times on French soil, both times Ymer won! However, these victories should not be really meaningful, because Otte retired once, the other time it was very close from his point of view at 4-6, 4-6.
The German betting companies are of the opinion that he will be the stronger player on Wednesday anyway. The odds show an average of 1.55 to 2.40, so the margin is kept within limits.
Elias Ymer was already a participant in the ATP tournament in Stockholm ten years ago, but I still cannot find any successes in this history. Twice he made it past the 1st round, most recently in 2018.
That could be a good omen: Back then, he won against Maximilian Marterer at the beginning, also a German. But I definitely can’t see the Swede being in a good mood at the moment.
At the US Open, he was eliminated in round 1 of the qualifying, and his results thereafter remained poor. Ymer only played in small tournaments or Challengers and often went home early.
The two most recent competitions were over before they had even started. In Stockholm, Ymer can at least not be eliminated in the qualification, but of course he doesn’t want to congratulate Otte on his victory from the start either.

Oscar Otte wants to prove once again in the final weeks of 2022 that he has rightly become Germany’s second best tennis player. It’s good that the performance curve was already slowly going up again in the last few tournaments.
We noticed that the 29-year-old did very well against top opponents like Marin Cilic and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Since Elias Ymer could not deliver good results, I can only recommend the following tip for Wednesday:
