The first Grand Slam of 2023 is history, for the German ladies it did not necessarily end successfully. Jule Niemeier, probably the most promising talent, was knocked out in the first round.
But the defeat still brought her a lot of praise. Now she will compete in the Lyon Open and wants to get through the round of 16 on Wednesday.

A quick exit both in Adelaide and at the Australian Open? For Jule Niemeier, the new year definitely did not start as desired. However, the 23-year-old doesn’t have to worry, because she has lost to other players of a different calibre.
While she failed against Karolina Pliskova in Adelaide, the draw in Melbourne was really merciless. She immediately caught Iga Swiatek, the best player in the world. Niemeier sold herself magnificently and was able to really hurt the Polish player.
But at the end of a great performance, Niemeier lost 4-6, 5-7 and was allowed to leave with a lot of applause and prepare for the tournament in Lyon. There she met Olga Danilovic for the first time.
Despite being the clear favourite, Niemeier had a hard time but finally reached the last 16. 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, she will definitely have to improve on this performance in the round of the best eight.
The Dortmund player made eight double faults, a rate that is of course far too high. Her current opponent is only two places behind her in the rankings, so the number 71 will meet the number 73.
Niemeier and Camila Osorio faced each other for the first time in 2019, back then in the Daytona qualifying. The German won the close match 6-4, 6-4, so now it comes to a premiere in the main draw of a tournament.
The bookmakers are betting on a win for Niemeier, with average odds of 1.65 to 2.10. Nobody actually expected Camila Osorio to reach the last 16 in Lyon.
Alize Cornet, seeded third, was considered a heavy favourite, but in the end it was actually Osorio who snatched a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. The third set in particular impressed the fans.
Osorio did not even play her best tennis, but profited from her opponent’s weaknesses. Ten double faults and only six break chances in 16 attempts – there is still room for improvement.
At the Australian Open, the Colombian had survived the first round. Who was waiting in the second round? Niemeier’s defeater Swiatek, of all people! Here, Osorio had no chance, her 2-6, 3-6 was clearly weaker than the result before.

Jule Niemeier had picked up many compliments Down Under, showed a great performance against Iga Swiatek. But now she has to prove that she can also control her nerves against her less strong rivals.
Camila Osorio is right behind her in the world rankings, so she won’t be easy to beat. Since both players had to go through three sets in the 1st round in Lyon and show various weaknesses, my tip is:
