ATP Los Cabos tournament, semi-finals, Saturday, 06.08.2022
Will the world No. 1 finally win his first title in 2022? Things have been extremely modest for Daniil Medvedev so far, but things now seem to be going really well again on Mexican soil.
In the semi-final, which will be played on Saturday night, he is the clear favourite at Bet365 despite challenging opponents. In my Medvedev Kecmanovic tip I reveal why my bet will also go in a Russian direction!
That a world No. 1 is so unhappy, hardly gets any successful results and already profits a good deal from the string results of the competition? That hasn’t happened in men’s tennis for a long time either.
Daniil Medvedev was leading 2-0 against Rafael Nadal in the final of the Australian Open in January, lost control and gave away the victory. At that time, nobody suspected that this would be the beginning of a long dry spell.
The 26-year-old looked tired, first only failing against top stars, then also against clearly inferior opponents. Gael Monfils, Richard Gasquet or Tim van Rijthoven, no name was too small not to annoy Medvedev.
At the French Open, he was dismantled by Marin Cilic in the round of 16 with 2-6, 3-6, 2-6, and in Hertogenbosch and Halle, he was dealt a severe drubbing in the finals. Everyone was puzzled: What’s wrong with the normally ice-cold Medvedev?
After being suspended at Wimbledon, he returned to the court in Los Cabos, Mexico, and things finally seem to be going much better here. He started the tournament with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Rinky Hijikata and was even more convincing in the quarter-finals.
Ricardas Berankis, who had seriously embarrassed Rafael Nadal in Wimbledon, was no real opponent, Medvedev came to a 6-2, 6-2. He did not allow a break in either match, but always won more than 80% of the points on the first serve.
“I’m playing great here so far. The further you get, the tougher the matches, the tougher the opponents, the more pressure,” said the Russian about his performance. It was only a few months ago that he faced Miomir Kecmanovic for the first and only time.
6-2, 6-4, 6-2, at the French Open the match went as desired from Medvedev’s point of view. German bettors can apparently envisage a similar result on Saturday, with him ahead at 1.20 to 4.50 on average.
Kecmanovic has been absolutely off his game in recent months. In preparation for Wimbledon, he didn’t manage a single win, and in London itself, he was completely without a chance against compatriot Novak Djokovic in Round 3.
In Los Cabos, however, everything has worked out so far that was not possible before. Against Jordan Thompson he started with a 6-4, 6-2, but he should be able to improve on this performance.
Brandon Nakashima, by no means a bad player, had no chance at all against fourth seed Kecmanovic in the quarter-finals. The favourite took the match 6-2, 6-4.
He allowed one break, but also had to fend off four chances against Nakashima. In terms of serve, the statistics are clearly lower than Medvedev’s, which may also be due to the fact that the Serb has 15 centimetres less body length.
My Medvedev Kecmanovic tip
For Daniil Medvedev, a months-long drought can come to an end in Mexico. He himself is very happy with his performance in Los Cabos, he also did very well in my analysis.
Miomir Kecmanovic is undoubtedly also playing a strong tournament, but Medvedev currently seems too stable for his opponent to really do anything here. In this respect, my tip is:
Medvedev beats Kecmanovic 2:0!
