Wimbledon 2023, Quarter Finals, Wednesday, 12/07/2023
The best eight players of Wimbledon 2023, they have been decided! In addition to some names that everyone really expected to be so far ahead, there are also two who sneaked into the quarter-finals in a very surprising way.
One of them is more than two metres tall, comes from the USA – and is playing the tournament of his life. He has already knocked out two absolute top players, and now the third is to have a go – even if it sounds like David against Goliath at Bwin.
In my Medvedev Eubanks tip, I will look for facts that could make another sensation possible. In any case, my betting recommendation is: The favourite will not win here by nil!
Honour, Christopher Eubanks, quarter-finalist at Wimbledon 2023! Of course, the American is a household name to most tennis fans, but hand on heart, who had him in mind for this third Grand Slam of the year?
He is over two metres tall, 27 years old and has been on the tour for a good five years. A 2nd round was his best result on the big stage so far, now he has clearly improved.
At the Mallorca Open, just before leaving for London, Eubanks showed for the first time what he is actually made of. He won the tournament, his five matches featured six tiebreaks.
The giant serves incredibly well, sometimes even reminding one of the king of aces, John Isner. And so it is not surprising that he knows close results in the English capital, where the decisive moments go in his favour.
After beating Thiago Monteiro 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, 6-3, Eubanks surprised everyone for the first time when he beat Cameron Norrie 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6. Although this was followed by an outright victory in Round 3, it was one that could not have been more exciting.
Against Christopher O’Connell, the scoreboard showed 7-6, 7-6, 7-6! 28, 21 and again 23, in terms of aces nobody could hold a candle to the 27-year-old. The rate of points won on the first serve was well over 80 percent.
In the round of 16, Stefanos Tsitsipas was an incredibly tough opponent for Eubanks. The US American was clearly in the underdog role, but showed from the beginning what happens when you underestimate him.
After a 3-6 in the first set, he did not get nervous, equalised at 7-6. Even after Tsitsipas took a 6-3 lead, the underdog didn’t waver. 6-4, 6-4, he celebrated probably the biggest success of his career!
With twelve aces, he was rather restrained this time, actually he was behind in all statistics – like points as a return player or games won. It was the necessary bit of luck that you sometimes need against world stars.
Daniil Medvedev is definitely in the same category as Stefanos Tsitsipas, he already met Christopher Eubanks once this year in Miami. The favourite won 6-3, 7-5 then, now he wants the second success.
Our bookmakers have no doubts about that, offering clear odds of 1.15 to 5.00. However, Medvedev will of course know that quite a few others have already failed against his upcoming opponent.
While Eubanks had to mobilise an immense amount of energy in the round of 16, the Russian advanced to the next round without much effort. His opponent, Jiri Lehecka, retired at 6-4, 6-2 to Medvedev.
This leaves Medvedev with one set to spare, having lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to Marton Fucsovics. He did not show any mistakes against Adrian Mannarino (6-3, 6-3, 7-6) and Arthur Fery (7-5, 6-4, 6-3).
The statistics on his own service did not quite come up to the values of Eubanks. All in all, without wanting to discredit the US-American, I have to say: Fery, Mannarino, Fucsovics, Lehecka and Eubanks?
It really wouldn’t have been the hardest way to reach the semi-finals if Medvedev had progressed. In any case, this is the first time the Russian has made it into the top four at Wimbledon, and perhaps he will be a little nervous on Wednesday?
My Medvedev Eubanks tip
On paper, Daniil Medvedev should be clearly ahead against Christopher Eubanks, but the match won’t be that easy in my eyes. The favourite had relatively easy opponents, the one from the last 16 even gave up.
Eubanks’ success against Stefanos Tsitsipas, on the other hand, stands out. The US-American is also the champion of Mallorca, impresses us with nerves of steel and serve.
I therefore don’t think Medvedev will be able to completely escape the strength of his opponent, especially since Eubanks has the crowd on his side. Therefore, my tip is also:
Eubanks takes (at least) one set against Medvedev!
