ATP Shanghai Tournament, Quarterfinals, Thursday, 10/12/2023
The next win against a top 10 player for Fabian Marozsan. In the round of 16 the Hungarian could defeat Casper Ruud. Now Hubert Hurkacz is waiting on Thursday, who took local hero Zhizhen Zhang out of the field.
In my Marozsan Hurkacz tip I look at suitable odds for this match. It will be the first clash between these two pros. I’ll jump on the high odds rack of Betano.
He is one of the newcomers in the tennis year 2023, Fabian Marozsan. At the latest since his success against Carlos Alcaraz in Rome, he is feared by the competition. In the third round, he handed the Spaniard one of only three clay-court defeats from 30 matches!
He then failed to beat Borna Coric, who also had a strong clay-court season. Marozsan later won the Challenger tournament in Perugia and saw the semifinals in Banja Luka.
On the big stage, he was only able to make his mark again in Shanghai, but several times in a row. Already the two-set win against Alex De Minaur (6-3, 7-5) caused a sensation. In the round of 16 he finally beat Ruud 7-6, 3-6, 6-4.
56 Winner he beat Ruud around the ears. The current 91 of the world is known for his aggressive style of play, with which he secures all points in a rush. However, that also means that when he’s in bad form on a given day, he’s also quick to take defeats.
That’s when his statistics show a lot more unforced errors than the meager 13 against the three-time Grand Slam finalist. In total, he had 14 break chances in the round of 16. Ruud had eleven.
A tiebreak against Hurkacz is expected by bettors despite the break-heavy matches. For at least a 7-6 in the match Interwetten has a 1.70 in the offer, the counter bet stands at 2.05.
After all, Hurkacz already played out three tiebreaks in three matches. As the world number 17, Hurkacz (1.40) is considered the favorite against Marozsan (2.90). However, the high odds difference surprises me.
With the current level Marozsan offers, he is a danger for any tennis player and Hurkacz stumbled in the last round against Zhang: 7-6, 4-6, 7-6.
Thanasi Kokkinakis (7-6, 6-4) also forced the Pole into a tiebreak earlier in the second round, came close to winning the set. For at least one Marozsan set, Betano has lucrative odds of 1.70.
That is definitely in the cards for the 24-year-old, if not the match win. However, he will have fewer opportunities in the return game compared to the match against Ruud.
Hurkacz is clearly the better server, served 16 aces against Zhang and converted 88 percent of his first serves into points. Also against Kokkinakis it was 86 percent.
However, Hurkacz will also have to be prepared for unpleasant rallies in which he will be sent to the net again and again. Ruud can already sing a song about that.
Marozsan herself is also strong at the net, making 39 of the 49 points in his last match when storming forward. Which bet I’ll give you in the end, I’ll tell you now in my conclusion.
My Marozsan Hurkacz Tip
Against Zhang, Hurkacz wobbled in the last round, ultimately winning the match with two tiebreak victories. In the tournament, the Pole didn’t let much get by on his serve, as his first serve came in reliably at at least 70 percent in every match.
But at the same time, he could hardly get into the service games of his opponents, which is why three of seven sets ended in tiebreaks. It could be a very uncomfortable match against the up-and-coming Marozsan.
The Hungarian is in top form, has a versatile hitting repertoire, with which he worked out numerous winners in the first rounds against Ruud, De Minaur and Co. Especially his sharp stops will be a dangerous weapon against Hurkacz. I trust him to win!
My Marozsan Hurkacz tip: Marozsan wins the first set and the match!
