ATP Tournament in Mallorca, 1st round, Tuesday, 21.06.2022
Is Nick Kyrgios really a candidate to win Wimbledon? As well as the Australian is serving these weeks, some experts actually have him on their radar.
On Tuesday he will start at the ATP tournament in Mallorca, of course again with the aim of reaching at least the semi-finals. Since the bookmakers are sure of his victory, I take a close look at the match in my Kyrgios Djere tip and reveal why I too think highly of him!
Whether skipping the clay court season (with the exception of one tournament) has paid off for Nick Kyrgios? Opinions have been divided on the 27-year-old for years, but there is currently one unanimous opinion: he hasn’t been this strong for a long time!
He was already convincing on hard court and was able to annoy the greats, but on grass he seems to have found his calling. In Stuttgart he had failed in the round of the best four against Andy Murray, had caused too much drama off the court.
In Halle he was even a little better. He eliminated Stefanos Tsitsipas and Pablo Carreno Busta and was only a stone’s throw away from the final. 6-4, 6-7, 6-7 against Hubert Hurkacz, it was not to be on this day.
Kyrgios lost the match without allowing a single break (in two opportunities), a defeat could not have come about more unfortunately. His serve is his biggest triumph these days anyway.
He rattled 30 aces over the net against Hurkacz, he only allowed one break in the entire tournament in Halle. If the enfant terrible concentrates on the essentials, he can hardly be stopped.
Of course, he wants to seamlessly continue this form on Mallorca and recommend himself for Wimbledon. Kyrgios has risen to 45th in the world, and his opponent in the 1st round is exactly ten places behind him.
However, I don’t see anyone clearly favouring him in the bookmakers’ rankings. At odds of 1.10 to 6.50, not even a 2-0 is profitable, because even that falls short of 1.50.
Laslo Djere knows, of course, that hardly anyone is counting on him. The Serb could not keep up with the performances of a Nick Kyrgios in the last weeks. In Halle, he was already eliminated after the second game, but did not cut a bad figure in the 6-7, 4-6 against Karen Khachanov.
It’s been two and a half months since Djere won two matches at a tournament, since then he often sells himself well, but can hardly win close duels.
The serve is not bad, but Djere is nowhere near Kyrgios’ values. He gave away ten break chances against Khachanov, and the Australian probably needs three whole tournaments to do that.
Incidentally, Kyrgios and Djere have never met. The Serb is not known as a specialist on grass, so I can understand the high odds in view of Kyrgios’ past performances.
My Kyrgios Djere Tip
No question, what Nick Kyrgios is currently delivering is not what everyone expected. Once again it shows that when he shows discipline, he can go a long way. In Stuttgart and Halle, his serve in particular was unique.
In my analysis, I could hardly find any facts that let Laslo Djere keep up here. The Serb fights well, but is clearly inferior, especially in service. Therefore my tip is:
Kyrgios wins at less than 22.5 games!
