ATP Los Cabos Tournament, 1st Round, Wednesday, 03.08.2022
A real thriller separated Yannick Hanfmann from a final a few days ago, how will the German react? In Los Cabos he wants to confirm his recent form
And that despite the fact that his opponent in the 1st round is not far away from him. In my Hempman Thompson tip, I therefore reveal why I can only imagine a close result with a few matches in the end!
Last week the rain of Kitzbühel, now the sun of Mexico – Yannick Hanfmann has had quite a long journey. Only on Saturday he was able to turn his back on Austria, but not entirely voluntarily.
In the semi-final against Filip Misolic, the score was 2-6, 6-2, before the tiebreak was suspended due to the weather. It was made up for on Saturday, Hanfmann lost out and went straight to the airport.
The semi-final was a great success, but the narrow defeat at the end was all the more bitter. Strictly speaking, he only celebrated two victories at this tournament, one of them 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 against Dominic Thiem.
The German had beaten Ivan Gachov 6-3, 6-7, 6-4. Gerald Melzer had to retire, Tallon Griekspoor could not even compete. So the 30-year-old was a bit lucky in Kitzbühel.
Now he takes part in the tournament in Los Cabos for the first time, at the same time it comes to the first direct duel against Jordan Thompson. Hanfmann is ten centimetres taller than his rival, whether that can bring victory in the end?
He doesn’t really get more than 65% on average on his first serve, so his service is not his greatest strength. I wonder if it’s also because German bettors apparently find it hard to imagine Hanfmann triumphing in the end.
2.50 to 1.50, the odds are more oriented towards the opponent. But they also show that everything is likely to come down to a close match. Hanfmann is ranked 139 in the world, Jordan Thompson is ranked 114th
The Australian was in the quarter-finals in Los Cabos a year ago, only narrowly eliminated by Brandon Nakashima. Will he be able to go far again in 2022? His journey was much shorter than Hanfmann’s, as he recently played in Atlanta.
He was already eliminated in the first round, 5-7, 6-3, 3-6 against the aforementioned Brandon Nakashima. He was already eliminated in Newport when Jason Kubler was too strong.
Thompson has clearly fallen off after his strong June. Two months ago he had won the Surbiton Trophy, but he was seeded at position 2. A little later he lost the final of the Nottingham Challenger.
So he can definitely go far, but he almost only beats opponents who are behind him in the world ranking.
My Hemp Thompson Tip
The Kitzbühel semi-final was a great success for Yannick Hanfmann, but there was some luck involved. All the matches he finished went over three sets, and it was a similar story for Jordan Thompson recently.
The Australian wants to celebrate a victory again after two eliminations in the first round, a year ago he reached the quarter-finals in Los Cabos. With these two players, I don’t expect a very quick result, which is why my tip is:
We see more than 20.5 Games!
