Wimbledon, 1st Round, Monday, 03/07/2023
Last year’s Wimbeldon finalist enters the tournament ranked only No. 30 after a long injury layoff and faces a tough opponent in the opener of tennis’ most prestigious tournament.
David Goffin challenges the Australian, and if both players were in top form, this duel would have semi-final character. But both stars are currently struggling. Who will prevail? I’ll reveal the best odds in my Goffin Kyrgios tip
The tennis world is in for quite a treat in the first round of Wimbledon. Among others, David Goffin and Nick Kyrgios will meet, two strong grass court players.
The Belgian, however, has been struggling with his performance since the turn of the decade. He has slipped from seventh to 123rd place.
Goffin had his best grass-court season in 2019, when he played out the final against Roger Federer in Halle after wins over Alexander Zverev and Matteo Berrettini, losing in two sets.
He also started strongly at Wimbledon, but was eventually beaten in the quarter-finals by the eventual tournament winner Novak Djokovic.
In 2022, he was able to return to his better days at Wimbledon time and reached the last eight in the English capital for the second time.
This year, Goffin won 18 of his 33 matches. Half of his successes came in Challenger tournaments. Goffin started on grass in Hertogenbosch, but after qualifying successfully he lost in two sets to Halle winner Alexander Bublik.
Goffin went into the second round of the Ilkley Challenger, but benefited from the retirement of his opponent Dominic Stricker, who led in the second after losing the first set.
World 155 Juncheng Shang, however, retained the upper hand against the Rocourt man in round two. Goffin has still not found his form at the start of Wimbledon.
That’s why he is only an outsider in his opening match against Kyrgios, who has been struggling with a knee injury and the aftermath of a robbery, despite much more playing experience this year.
Bet3000 has a 1.60 in its repertoire for a Kyrgios win. More than double the stake beckons as a win for Goffin. At 3.50 odds, an outright 3-0 win for the Australian is considered the most likely outcome.
However, the 28-year-old only played one match in 2023. In Stuttgart, he played Yibing Wu in mid-June, but lost in two sets and then had to take another break because of his knee.
Kyrgios took it easy for the big tournament. In London, he was able to take important training lessons. “I’ve played with some good people here in the last few days,” he explained in London, but also points to some question marks with him.
The fact is that a five-set match would be a big hurdle for him. But I don’t expect that in this duel. Due to the rather uncertain form of both players, a clear result is likely.
Therefore, a bet on under 4.5 sets could pay off. Betano provides 1.32 odds for this market. For Wimbledon Monday, a suitable tip for a combination bet.
Under 41.5 games I also consider realistic. Bet-at-home serves a 1.71 for this. With four 6-4 sets, for example, this bet would be won. A tiebreak would also be allowed in a four-set match if another round ends in double break.
My Goffin Kyrgios tip
Kyrgios is a bit of a surprise due to his long injury and being out again after his comeback. Nevertheless, there are a few bets to be made on this match.
If the Australian doesn’t find his way into the match, it could be a quick 3:0 for Goffin. If he has no problems, he will not give the Belgian any chance on the holy grass.
I expect two very uneven players to take the court on Monday, so it will be a short match. Therefore, I decide in my Goffin Kyrgios tip for under 41.5 games.
