US Open in New York, semifinals, Friday, 08.09.2023
Surprisingly easy for Cori Gauff against Swiatek defeater Jelena Ostapenko in the quarterfinals of the US Open. The 19-year-old is aiming for her first Grand Slam title.
A complicated task awaits her in the semifinals against French Open finalist Karolina Muchova. Which lady will make it to the final? I dare to make a prediction in my Gauff Muchova tip.
She is the great hope of the American fans. The world number seven Gauff wants to win her first Grand Slam title at the US Open.
In 2022 she was already close to it, but had no chance against high-flyer Swiatek in the final of the French Open. This year, too, the Pole was the final stop in Paris.
Now she can’t meet Swiatek again, as her quarterfinal opponent managed the coup against the world’s number one. But Ostapenko could hardly offer any resistance against Gauff and also produced too many errors.
The 19-year-old served strongly and managed a point rate of at least 60 percent on her first and second serves. At the same time, she attacked strongly during the Latvian’s service games and made use of six of her seven break chances.
Gauff herself allowed only one break in the second set, in the end the clear result: 6-0, 6-2. The matches before were more complicated.
In her first five matches she had to play three times over three sets. Among others, she met comebacker and former world number one Caroline Wozinacki: 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
The semifinal match against Muchova will not be any easier. Nevertheless, Gauff (1.50) goes into the match as the favorite. Interwetten assigns Muchova a 2.55.
The Czech only lost one set in the tournament. Xinyu Wing was able to equalize in the meantime, but in the end was unable to do anything against Muchova’s winners.
In the quarterfinals, the world number ten faced Sorana Cirstea. Like Gauff, Muchova managed to bagel her opponent in the first set: 6-0, 6-3.
The Romanian left too much to be desired throughout the match, had a total of eleven break chances like Muchova, but could only convert one of the opportunities into a match win.
Gauff and Muchova recently played the Masters final in Cincinnati. It was the only duel between the top-10 stars so far, and Gauff clearly decided the match in her favor with a 6-3, 6-4 win.
The lady from Atlanta was the stronger player in the decisive points, fending off six break chances and taking 63 percent of her chances herself.
Gauff is much more dangerous on her first serve. Although she did not manage an ace in the entire match, she won 71 percent of her points, which is significantly more than Muchova on her service.
In general, Muchova was more prone to losing service games in the last US Open rounds. Another 2:0 success is conceivable. Betano offers attractive 2.22 odds for this market.
However, I like even better a betting configurator combination at Bet365. If you bet on under 0.5 tiebreaks and a set win for Gauff, you get strong overall odds of 1.57.
In 24 sets played between the two ladies, there was only one tiebreak. The 1.33 for under 0.5 tiebreaks as individual odds would also be lucrative.
My Gauff Muchova tip
Gauff has already beaten Muchova in Cincinnati in two sets, but overall benefited from her efficiency and nerves, as the Czech even created one more break chance in Gauff’s service games.
I expect a close match with again many breaks, which is why the tiebreak should stay away as in 23 of the 24 sets. I consider Gauff to be the stronger player on the hard court and she should win a set in any case.
My Gauff Muchova tip: Gauff to win the set & under 0.5 tiebreaks
