Wimbledon 2022, Quarter Finals, Wednesday, 06/07/2022
Does he even mope his way to the title in the end? Does he provoke all the way to the trophy? Does he show once again at Wimbledon how good he can be when he wants to? Nick Kyrgios wants to enter the round of the best four on Wednesday!
Of course, the audience in London is once again hoping for a typical show for him. His opponent is actually a specialist on clay, unusual how far he has already come. And yet: with Betano, there is a very clear favourite. In my Garin Kyrgios tip, I reveal why I too would bet in the Australian direction!
Do London fans really want him in the final? It’s always one of those things with Nick Kyrgios. That he would misbehave at Wimbledon from time to time is no surprise to anyone.
For almost ten years, we have known: no matter how big or small his opponent is, the result can hardly be predicted. These days, Kyrgios is finally showing his very best side again and could ensure a brilliant performance.
Those who don’t like him at least get a great show every time. Like in the 1st round, when he had to go down in the first five sets against Paul Jubb. The Australian served all the more confidently in the following 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 against Filip Krajinovic.
Things almost escalated in the 3rd round. Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas, there was not much sympathy on the court here. Both provoked, wanted to force penalties, often enough quarreled with the referee.
At the end of an intense exchange of blows, it was Kyrgios who emerged victorious 6-7, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6. Winning in four sets against Tsitsipas – many thought Kyrgios would have little trouble against Brandon Nakashima afterwards.
But once again it became clear that this player is almost impossible to judge. In the end, he went into five sets for the second time and eventually won 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2.
He managed to take three of seven break chances, which is far better than the two he managed to get out of the 14 chances he had against Tsitsipas. His service with various aces is feared by every player in the world.
Also for Cristian Garin, against whom he has never played. If you ask the German bettors, they have a very clear opinion who will enter the semi-finals on Wednesday.
1.20 to 4.30, they all see Kyrgios in front. Also because Garin is not really known for strong results on grass. His path at Wimbledon is truly marked by the twist of fate.
Actually, he should have met Matteo Berrettini, one of the top favourites, in the 1st round, nobody trusted him to keep up here. Berrettini suddenly tested positive for Corona, the way was clear for Garin’s run.
Instead of the Italian, he smoothly beat Elias Ymer in the 1st round. Hugo Grenier was also without a chance, here the Chilean set up an emphatic 6-3, 6-1, 6-1. Jenson Brooksby also failed the sudden grass lover.
6-2, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, Garin’s performance was very commanding with just one minor exception. Then, in the round of 16, his path seemed to have come to an end. Alex de Minaur, a secret favourite, was already leading 6-2, 6-5, the third set went into a tiebreak.
When Garin took a 7-6 here, luck was suddenly on his side. 6-4, 7-6, the decisive balls were all his, unbelievable that he made the quarter-finals perfect after well over four hours.
If he had not only used six of 22 break chances, he might have saved himself a set. Now Garin is playing in the round of the best eight for the first time, while Kyrgios was already this far ahead eight years ago.
The Australian serves irresistibly but lets almost all opponents play along. Also Cristian Garin? Nobody really expected him here at Wimbledon.
Especially his comeback against Alex de Minaur was very impressive. He fights his way into all games, no deficit is too big for him. Kyrgios definitely has problems against such fighters. Since I still think he is the stronger, I come to the following tip:
Kyrgios wins at over 30.5 games!
