Wimbledon, 3rd round, Friday, 04.07.2025, 12:00 p.m.
Who will fly the flag for Germany at Wimbledon? Alexander Zverev won’t be doing it after his first-round exit! On the hallowed turf, I can’t help but turn my attention to the women’s competition, where there could be a very pleasant surprise in store.
An experienced player from Swabia is entering the third round on Friday, and it seems that anything is possible in the women’s competition.
Accordingly, I’m taking a very close look at my Siegemund Keys tip – and I’ll tell you why, from a German perspective, I’m still going into the match with muted expectations.
Introducing Laura Siegemund, participant in the third round of Wimbledon 2025! At the ripe tennis age of 37, the Swabian has actually won two matches on the Wimbledon grass for the first time in her career. And that despite the fact that her preparation was anything but ideal.
She was knocked out in the first round in both Nottingham and Bad Homburg, so she didn’t travel to the English capital in the best of spirits. Once there, Siegemund started the tournament with a confident 6-4, 6-2 win over Peyton Stearns.
A result that no one would have expected her to achieve in the second round against Leylah Fernández – and it turned out to be even more convincing! Siegemund snatched a 6-2, 6-3 victory and could hardly believe her triumph. She didn’t allow a single break, remained highly focused and avoided double faults, while 67% of her first serves crossed the net.
“It’s so nice, that’s why I’m still playing tennis and singles, because I know I can still achieve great results. I’m mega proud. I didn’t expect to still be this far in the singles.” Laura Siegemund’s real strength has been in doubles for quite some time. As a result, singles often has to take a back seat.
The fact that she is the clear underdog in the current round is unlikely to bother her, as she was also the underdog against Fernández. The average odds from our betting providers, excluding tax, are 5.30 to 1.13.
Even the bet that Siegemund will win a set is an impressive 2.50 at Betano.
Siegemund has played Madison Keys twice, with the score at 1:1. The reigning Australian Open champion is, of course, an absolute powerhouse as an opponent, so Siegemund will have to hope that Keys has a bad day.
A few days ago, the American lost to Tatjana Maria in Queens. So could it be that her German opponents are not particularly suited to her at the moment?
Her first-round exit in Berlin didn’t exactly fill her with confidence either. And indeed, Madison Keys came very close to leaving Wimbledon already!
In the first round, she struggled to a tense 6-7, 7-5, 7-5 victory over Elena-Gabriela Ruse, wasting a lot of energy. Against Olga Danilovic, her game looked much more confident at 6-4, 6-2.
80% first serves in, 73% of points won on her first serve and even 80% on her second? That was impressive. But she also made seven double faults, something Laura Siegemund completely avoided.
The 30-year-old has reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon twice, which is currently a record in her career. Not to forget: it was nine years ago that she and Laura Siegemund met at Wimbledon – the American won 6-3, 6-1 to advance confidently to the second round.
My Siegemund Keys tip
Laura Siegemund can already pat herself on the back, having achieved her best career result at Wimbledon. After her surprise victory over Leylah Fernández, the Swabian now wants to cause a major sensation against Madison Keys.
Keys faltered badly at the start, but came back even stronger. Siegemund’s double burden should not be underestimated, as she is actually one of the favorites here. For me personally, that’s also a reason to bet (unfortunately from a German perspective):
Siegemund clearly defeated by Keys!
