French Open in Paris, 2nd round, Thursday, 01.06.2023
Slipped into the main draw as a lucky loser, experienced a wild rollercoaster with five sets in the 1st round of the main draw – Yannick Hanfmann will definitely not be bored at this French Open 2023!
Now the German plays his second match, the opponent is clearly better listed.
In my Cerundolo Hanfmann tip I now reveal why I assume that the Argentine will still be a bit too strong!
Yannick Hanfmann has already played four times in Paris, but he didn’t expect to experience so many different emotions beforehand!
After losing the third qualifying match, he was actually already out, but due to a cancellation, he slipped into the first round. There, the match against Thiago Monteiro took place.
The bookies saw the German in the role of favourite, and at first it seemed as if that would happen in no time. Hanfmann was 6-3, 7-5 up, a little later he managed to break at 4-4 and even had a match point.
But those who thought the match was over were wrong. In the end, the scoreboard showed 6-3, 7-6, 6-7, 6-7, 6-4 and Hanfmann could take a deep breath! He fought off eight of Monteiro’s eleven break opportunities and made use of six out of nine.
The two stood on the court for almost exactly five hours, fighting deep into the night to advance. “Relief, joy, simply finished! I always believed in it! A match like this is never over until the last ball is played. I’m riding a little wave at the moment.”
For the first time in his career, the 31-year-old has now reached the 2nd round at a Grand Slam, which alone should be motivation enough. Hanfmann showed that the recent quarter-final in Rome was by no means just a fluke.
He has already made the acquaintance of Francisco Cerundolo twice. In 2022 he lost a match in the qualifiers, this year he failed in the 3rd round in Buenos Aires 6-2, 4-6, 5-7.
Hanfmann would now like to take revenge for this narrow defeat. If you believe our betting providers, he is not without a chance! The odds come to 1.50 to 2.60, so they are not too far apart.
Francisco Cerundolo has climbed quite a bit in the world rankings, and with a strong French Open he could even slip into the top 20 players in the world. On clay, he has put the fear of God into some of the greats in the last few weeks.
He beat Cameron Norrie, Casper Ruud and Jannik Sinner, and also gained a lot of confidence when he reached the final in Lyon. Can he now go on a winning streak in Paris?
To start with, he won 6-1, 2-6, 7-6, 6-1 against Jaume Munar. He made the most of nine of his twelve break chances, and this was a key to his success. It is now the first time he has reached Round 2 at the French Open.
This year in Melbourne, the Argentine celebrated a premiere, advancing to a 3rd round at a Grand Slam for the first time. The 24-year-old definitely has what it takes to repeat that feat right away.
My Cerundolo Hanfmann Tip
Has Yannick Hanfmann recovered from the exertions of his rollercoaster ride against Thiago Monteiro? He had to fight for five long hours, which must have taken a lot of energy. Francisco Cerundolo finished his task a little earlier.
The Argentine is one of the 25 best players in the world and has already eliminated some greats on clay this year. As much as we would like to see a German win, Cerundolo is still a number too big in my eyes. That’s why my tip is:
Cerundolo wins against Hanfmann!
