Wimbledon, 1st Round, Tuesday, 28/06/2022
If anyone can threaten Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon, it’s Matteo Berrettini! At least that’s the opinion of the bookmakers, who believe the Italian has a lot of potential. Grass is simply his surface.
He will face a challenging opponent in the first round, but Mobilebet is sure that he will have no problems. In my Berrettini Garin tip, I reveal why my betting recommendation goes in a similar direction!
If you believe the bookmakers, you’d have to say: Matteo Berrettini has never been so close to the biggest success of his career. In fact, he is listed right behind Novak Djokovic as one of the absolute top favourites at Wimbledon.
Where does this optimism come from? Didn’t the Roman have to take a long break in mid-March, after the Masters at Indian Wells? He was not seen on clay, not Berrettini’s favourite surface anyway, instead he concentrated fully on training on grass.
With success, because as soon as he was back on court, he won two titles in a row! He triumphed in Stuttgart as well as in Queens. There is no better way to prepare for Wimbledon, both athletically and mentally.
Although he won both tournaments, there was a clear improvement. In Stuttgart he recorded very close results, a 7-6, 7-6 against Oscar Otte was the only result without a third set.
As soon as he was on the island, apparently he feels very comfortable there and then everything worked out much better. He beat Daniel Evans, Tommy Paul, Botic van de Zandschulp and Filip Krajinovic easily in two sets.
Not the best opponents, but Cristian Garin is by no means to be found one tier higher. Is that one of the reasons why the odds are so clear? 1.03 to 14.00 on average, you can’t get clearer about who is favourite and who is underdog.
Of course, last year is still on Matteo Berrettini’s mind. He played his way to the final at Wimbledon and won the first set against Novak Djokovic. Even though he lost 1:4 in the end, this match showed what he is capable of on grass.
Known for his powerful service, the 26-year-old is leading 2-1 in the direct duel with Garin, whose most recent match ended with an unchallenged 7-5, 6-3, 6-0. The Chilean will know that many will be expecting a similar result on Tuesday.
He has dropped to 43rd in the world rankings, not particularly comfortable on grass anyway. A year ago, he made it through the first round for the first time and actually did quite well.
Garin reached the round of 16, but did not have to play a single player in the top 100. As soon as he faced Novak Djokovic, he suffered a bitter defeat. While Berrettini’s preparation was more than successful, it was a completely different story for Garin.
In Eastbourne he clearly failed against Alex de Minaur, in Halle just as clearly against Sebastian Korda. The 26-year-old may always be an unpleasant opponent on clay, but the same cannot be said of his performances on grass.
My Berrettini Garin Tip
Matteo Berrettini has made an impressive comeback. Unfortunately, I could see rather the opposite with Cristian Garin. Grass is not his surface, Wimbledon not his Grand Slam. Since he more than clearly lost the most recent duel against Berrettini, I recommend the following tip:
Berrettini wins with a maximum of 33 games!
