Australian Open today – Matches today 27.01.
With hardly any matches left, the excitement couldn’t be higher – the Australian Open 2022 is slowly but surely getting ready for new champions in men’s and women’s singles! The two finals will take place this weekend.
Of course, there are not many matches left on the Australian Open schedule for Thursday, 27 January. Since the men are taking a break, there are actually only two matches to look forward to.
In the women’s singles, four semi-finalists have been found. One was considered a safe bet beforehand, another was always listed among the favourites. But only a few people had the other two on their radar.
And so it happens that the two favourites for the title each have a relatively easy opponent. At least that’s what the numbers say on paper, but anything can happen in a Grand Slam semi-final!
Australian Open 2022 – 27.01. Preview of Day 11
Local hero Ashleigh Barty takes to the court in the first women’s semi-final. Winning a Grand Slam in front of her own fans, what could be better? Her opponent will be Madison Keys, who is far, far below her in the world rankings. Will Barty continue to fly through Melbourne without losing a set?
Once this duel is over, the French Open winner from the year before last will get into the action. Many had Iga Swiatek on their minds as the favourite behind Barty. She had some major problems during the tournament and now has to fight off Danielle Collins. Will she be able to do that or will we at least see an American in the final?
Australian Open today: Where are the matches on 27.01.?
The experts from Eurosport around Boris Becker don’t have too much to do in the meantime either. German players are no longer represented, on Thursday they can devote themselves entirely to the two women’s semi-finals. By the way, as fans already know, the matches can also be followed via DAZN live stream, linked to Eurosport.
Australian Open today 27.01: Ashleigh Barty – Madison Keys (09:30 hrs)
That SHE made it to the final is really the opposite of a sensation now. Ashleigh Barty, the world number 1, was on everyone’s radar. She herself has never made it to the final in her home country.
It is clear that she wants to make up for it now, and the draw has certainly helped her to keep her head above water. The fact that she has not dropped a single set is only the epitome of her impeccable performances.
She played five matches and only 17 games went to her opponents! Of course, such results sound phenomenal, but we must not forget that she did not have to compete against any of the top players.
Jessica Pegula was still the strongest opponent according to the ranking. But Madison Keys also belongs to the ranks of those who have not lost anything (anymore) in the front area. Ranked 51st, it is clear that she is the clear underdog against Barty.
1.20 to 4.40, is that fair? Of course, the American also played a great tournament. Unlike Barty, she threw out notable competition. First she beat Sofia Kenin soundly, then she did the same against Paula Badosa.
Her 6-3, 6-2 win over Barbora Krejcikova was particularly strong. If she can hold serve, there might be a small chance of making it to the Australian Open final for the first time!
Our Expert Tip: 2:0 Barty
Australian Open today 27.01: Danielle Collins – Iga Swiatek (10:45am)
The 2020 French Open crown was her greatest success, now at the age of 20 she could add a second final at a Grand Slam. Iga Swiatek was considered a co-favourite Down Under from the start.
But the Pole did not have a problem-free tournament like Ashleigh Barty. She survived the first three rounds against Harriet Dart, Rebecca Peterson and Daria Kasatkina without any problems, having dropped twelve games.
Things got much tighter against Sorana Cirstea at 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. That Swiatek is not at 100% became especially clear in the quarter-finals. Against Kaia Kanepi, the world number 115, she won 4-6, 7-4, 6-3. That was close!
Twelve double faults, she must not repeat that on Thursday. Will Danielle Collins suit her as an opponent? The only duel between the two so far took place a year ago, when Collins had to retire injured.
The American is one of the big surprises of this AO. In 2019, she reached the semi-finals, but was eliminated by Petra Kvitova. She didn’t get the absolute top opponents either.
She has beaten Caroline Dolehide, Ana Konjuh, Clara Tauson, Elise Mertens and Alize Cornet, twice having to go into a third set. With 1.60 to 2.35 Swiatek is ahead here, the pure effort might have been the same for both.
Our Expert Tip: 3 Sets
