Australian Open today – Matches today 24.01.
A full week has passed at the Australian Open 2022, a lot has happened. In both the women’s and men’s tournaments, some of the favourites have already gone home.
A second week? Many of the stars didn’t even make it. From the German point of view, it is of course a great pity that there are no more black-red-gold flags flying in Down Under, even title favourite Alexander Zverev is out.
The men’s and women’s round of 16 will be completed on Monday, so the top eight players of the tournament have not yet been determined. But the top favourites are still in the running.
Slowly, things are getting serious, because the way to winning the title is not too far away. One bad moment can cost a triumph, something Alexander Zverev can tell you a thing or two about since his elimination from the tournament against Denis Shapovalov.
Australian Open 2022 – 24.01. Preview of Day 8
Unfortunately, we are looking for German names in vain on day eight of the Australian Open schedule. On the men’s side, Monday starts with a secret favourite, as Jannik Sinner wants to prevail against Alex de Minaur.
A little later, Marin Cilic wants to show that he is far from being old-fashioned in his match against the young Felix Auger-Aliassime. Will he be able to take advantage of the Canadian’s often weak nerves?
After Zverev’s elimination, there is only one top favourite left: Daniil Medvedev. The world number 2 is presented with the next easy opponent, this time his opponent is Maxime Cressy.
This duel will be followed, now we are already at 09:00 in German time, by what is estimated to be a very close match. Taylor Fritz, service specialist from the USA, wants to send Stefanos Tsitsipas home.
Kaia Kanepi is still in the women’s draw, having knocked out Angelique Kerber in the first round. It will be much more difficult in the round of 16, as the strong Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka awaits her.
Australian Open today broadcast: Where are the matches on 24.01.?
German players are no longer in Melbourne, but Eurosport will of course broadcast the matches on a large screen. From the very early hours of the morning, tennis fans will once again be offered their all-round carefree package for the Australian Open 2022 here.
Australian Open today 24.01: Alex de Minaur – Jannik Sinner (03:00 h)
Is Jannik Sinner really already a candidate for his first Grand Slam title? The young Italian is playing very strongly in Melbourne. He had clearly defeated Joao Sousa and Steve Johnson in the first two rounds without losing a set.
Against the strong qualifier Taro Daniel, he suffered his first slight weakness, but won 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the end. With seven break chances out of a possible 17, the potential for improvement is obvious.
In the first round of 16 at the AO, Sinner will now face Alex de Minaur. In 2019 and 2020 he won both head-to-head duels, this time he enters favoured at odds of 1.45 to 2.80. The Australian, however, will have the crowd on his side.
In 2021, he was eliminated by an Italian, and he doesn’t want that to happen again. He has already beaten Lorenzo Musetti (3-6, 6-3, 6-0, 6-3), Kamil Majchrzak (6-4, 6-4, 6-2) and Pablo Andujar (6-4, 6-4, 6-2) on home soil.
Our Expert Tip: Win Sinner
Australian Open today 24.01: Marin Cilic – Felix Auger-Aliassime (04:00)
He’s actually a green grass specialist, but can Marin Cilic convince at this Australian Open? The Croatian threw Andrey Rublev out of the tournament in the 3rd round with a 7-5, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3.
A strong performance, he had previously defeated two outsiders in Emilio Gomez and Norbert Gombos. He is attacking again after losing his 2018 AO final. Two years ago, he lost his Round of 16 match to a Canadian.
That’s exactly what he’s threatening to do in 2022! Good thing he won all three duels against Felix Auger-Aliassime in the last three years. The young Canadian was surprisingly confident in his 3rd round match as he defeated Daniel Evens in a quick 6-4, 6-1, 6-1.
Actually, he is known for other matches. His first two appearances against Emil Ruusuvuori and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina went the full distance. Now he could enter an AO quarter-final for the first time, with 1.70 to 2.20 at the bookmakers.
Our expert tip: Over 3.5 sets
Australian Open today 24.01: Maxime Cressy – Daniil Medvedev (04:00)
After Alexander Zverev’s retirement, HE is the only top favourite: Daniil Medvedev. The game plan is again extremely good for the Russian. After beating Henri Laaksonen, Nick Kyrgios took a set from him in Round 2.
Botic van de Zandschulp was then beaten again without any problems. Now he faces another easy opponent in the form of 70th-ranked Maxime Cressy, who should not spoil his first title in Melbourne.
12.00 to 1.05, we don’t even need to look at the odds here. What can the US American do? After wins over Christopher O’Connell and Tomas Machac, he faced service ace John Isner.
It was the expected thriller with the following final result: 7-6, 7-5, 6-7, 6-7 6-4! A great success, which cost all the more energy. Never before did Cressy play a round of 16 at a Grand Slam, and now also for the first time against Daniil Medvedev.
Our Expert Tip: Under 31.5 Games
Australian Open today 24.01: Taylor Fritz – Stefanos Tsitsipas (09:00am)
Can Stefanos Tsitsipas bag another big win after his AO semi-final in 2021? The world number 4 is playing solidly with a little room to improve. After the smooth win against Mikael Ymer, he already needed a fourth set against Sebastian Baez.
He also went into extra time against Benoit Paire at 6-3, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4. The Greek hit 21 aces in his 2nd round, although only just over half of his first serve made it over the net.
Taylor Fritz delivered a real thriller in the 3rd round. In his 6-0, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 against Roberto Bautista-Agut, it went up and down, his 19 aces probably saved the American. He already has a total of 56!
He has now reached the last 16 for the first time at the Australian Open. Fritz has lost both duels with Tsitsipas so far, but the two have not met since 2019. By the way, Tsitsipas is ahead this time with 2.50 to 1.50.
Our Expert Tip: Game HC +5.5 Fritz
Australian Open today 24.01.: Kaia Kanepi – Aryna Sabalenka (09:00 h)
Can the world number 2 in the women’s draw prevent Ashleigh Barty from triumphing? Aryna Sabalenka has been to two semi-finals at Grand Slams in 2021, and she is through to the last 16 at the Australian Open for the second year in a row.
Her three matches so far have had one thing in common: the Belarusian always gets going after trailing 0:1. This was the case against Storm Sanders, Wang Xinyu and Marketa Vondrousova.
Will Kaia Kanepi give her as many problems? The 36-year-old had surprised with a win over Angelique Kerber in Round 1 and went on to beat Marie Bouzkova and Maddison Inglis.
A year ago, both players met for the first time, funnily enough also in Melbourne. In the Gippsland Trophy, the Estonian won 6-1, 2-6, 6-1. Not many trust her to do that this time, with odds looking at 3.20 to 1.30 per Sabalenka.
Our Expert Tip: Over 19.5 Games
