Australian Open Tips today – Matches today from 18.01.
Some stars have already overcome the first hurdle at the Australian Open 2023. Some with bravura, others with considerably more effort. From a German point of view, the results were anything but positive, but at least Alexander Zverev fought his way through.
However, our Australian Open bets do not focus on the Olympic champion on Tuesday night, but on the international top players. This includes Daniil Medvedev, who has started brilliantly in Melbourne.
Next to him, Jannik Sinner wants to show that he is finally ready for a final at a really big tournament, so the 2nd round should not really be a problem. Stefanos Tsitsipas also wants to save his strength in his second appearance.
Rafael Nadal’s performance will also be very interesting. The record holder in Grand Slams made a small mistake at the beginning and now gets an opponent who will not be easy to play against.

Australian Open Tips Today – 18.01.2023 Preview Day 3
Jannik Sinner is definitely one of the favourites for the title at the Australian Open. His second opponent, Tomas Martin Etcheverry, should not be a stumbling block.
Hubert Hurkacz may be the favourite in the second round, but his opponent Lorenzo Sonego is anything but grateful. So can the Pole show his cool side?
Rafael Nadal dropped one set in his 1st round match, not everyone expected that. Now the veteran attacks Mackenzie McDonald. He is the favourite again, but small weaknesses can always creep in.
Daniil Medvedev, who obviously wants to forget his weak year 2022, had a perfect start with hardly any games surrendered. John Millman should not cause him any problems on a normal day.
Stefanos Tsitsipas also started with a smooth win, but set after set more and more uncertainties crept in. Rinky Hijikata, a young local hero, will certainly have taken a close look at that.
Tennis tips today broadcast: Where will the matches be played on 18.01.?
Eurosport has been trying to broadcast as many live rallies as possible day after day since the tournament began. No highlights are missed out in either the women’s or the men’s singles, and the expert shows are also broadcast in top quality via Eurosport and Eurosport 2.
Australian Open tips today 18.01.: Tomas Martin Etcheverry – Jannik Sinner (01:00 h)
The 2022 quarter-final with a loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas, it was Jannik Sinner’s best result at the Australian Open. The young South Tyrolean wants to finally hit the big time this year.
Last year didn’t really end well, so good performances in Melbourne are all the more important. In the preparatory tournament, Sinner lost to Sebastian Korda, but he played his first round of the AO with full concentration.
Kyle Edmund had no chance, the favourite secured a 6-4, 6-0, 6-2 and only allowed one break. He is now heavily favoured against Tomas Martin Etcheverry with odds of 1.05 to 9.50.
The Argentine won his first round match 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. And that, although he was only able to use four of his 16 break chances. The 1.96m giant is playing in the 2nd round of a Grand Slam for the very first time in his career, so he has no experience to show here.
Our Etcheverry Sinner expert tip: 3:0 Sinner
Australian Open tips today 18.01.: Hubert Hurkacz – Lorenzo Sonego (01:00 h)
Eleventh place against 47th place, for a 2nd round Australian Open match this is a real cracker. Hubert Hurkacz is the favourite in this duel, hanging Lorenzo Sonego at odds averaging 1.25 to 4.00.
And this despite the fact that the direct comparison is 3:1 in favour of the Italian. Only last year did Sonego collect a win. What is striking here is that the four direct duels contained five tiebreaks, and it was always very close.
Hurkacz started the AO with a 7-6, 6-2, 6-2 record and did not allow a single break chance against Pedro Martinez. He won 90% of the points on his first serve and his service was instrumental in the victory.
Hurkacz knows: The first Grand Slam of the year is not his favourite, here he has NEVER made it past the 2nd round! That’s exactly what Lorenzo Sonego wants to take advantage of, even if the 27-year-old undoubtedly left some grit in his 7-6, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1.
86% of his first serve went over the net successfully, giving him a run for his money against Hurkacz. Unlike his Polish opponent, he reached round 3 in 2022, losing to Miomir Kecmanovic.
Our Hurkacz Sonego expert tip: 3:1 Hurkacz
Australian Open tips today 18.01: Rafael Nadal – Mackenzie McDonald (04:00)
It started with problems but ended in his usual commanding fashion. Rafael Nadal started the Australian Open with a 3-1 win over Jack Draper, but was lucky that his nervous opponent could only take four of his eleven break opportunities.
7-5, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, it was only towards the end of the match that Nadal became unbeatable. The Spaniard failed once before the 3rd round in Melbourne, a second match has actually never been the final stop for him here.
With odds of 1.07 to 8.00, the bookies expect this to continue in 2023. Mackenzie McDonald, the world number 65, is unlikely to have travelled here just to congratulate himself, however.
He beat compatriot Brandon Nakashima in a real thriller, winning 7-6, 7-6, 1-6, 6-7, 6-4. McDonald met Nadal for the first time two and a half years ago and had no chance at all on the clay of Paris at 1-6, 0-6, 3-6.
Our Nadal McDonald expert tip: Win set McDonald
Australian Open tips today 18.01.: John Millman – Daniil Medvedev (09:00 h)
6-0, 6-1, 6-2? Daniil Medvedev could not have started the Australian Open much better or more impressively. The Russian, not in his best form in 2022, is finally looking to storm back to titles this year.
Against Marcos Giron, he played like in his best days, but allowed six break chances (all saved). After two final appearances in Melbourne, an exit in the 2nd round is not an option for him at all.
Apparently not for the betting companies either, because a win by Medvedev comes with difficulty to a measly 1.02. John Millman, his opponent, posts high values of a 13.00. The 33-year-old could just barely avoid an exit in the 1st round.
He won 6-7, 7-5, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 against Marc-Andrea Huesler; the fact that both tiebreaks were lost does not speak for his strong nerves. But beware: in 2020, he was also the gross underdog against Hubert Hurkacz in round 2, but bowled him out of the tournament outright.
Our Millman Medvedev expert tip: Game HC -9.5 Medvedev
Australian Open tips today 18.01.: Stefanos Tsitsipas – Rinky Hijikata (10:15 a.m.)
Is Rinky Hijikata writing a little tennis fairytale? The Australian is allowed to start at his home Grand Slam with a wildcard, was actually almost eliminated after losing two sets in the 1st round.
After losing 4-6, 4-6 to Yannick Hanfmann, the crowd helped him, the underdog actually came back to win 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. For the number 169 an unbelievable success, it is the first time that he is allowed to play a 2nd round at a Grand Slam.
His opponent reads overpowering: Stefanos Tsitsipas, the number 4 in the world. With regard to the odds, there is therefore no surprise, on average a 1.05 meets an 11.00. Is the Greek really free of difficulties?
In his 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 against Quentin Halys he got a little weaker from set to set, managed to fend off seven of the nine break chances he gave away. So maybe there really is a small chance for Hijikata!
Our Tsitsipas Hijikata expert tip: 3:0 Tsitsipas
