ATP Masters in Paris, round of 16, Thursday, 02.11.2023
A few days to go before the 2023 tennis season takes its Christmas break! The Masters in Paris is the last really big tournament before the ATP Finals in Turin.
From a German perspective, we are of course looking at the remaining pros in black, red and gold, as both are up against really tough opponents. On Thursday, the world number 54 will face a youngster who has regained his strength.
In this respect, it is no wonder that Bet3000 and co. do not see him as anything more than an outsider. In my Altmaier Rune tip, I’ll now reveal why I don’t see any realistic chance of victory either:
It was an extremely exciting, eventful year for Daniel Altmaier, characterized by many ups and downs, but also victories that he will remember for the rest of his life. Unfortunately, it was one that fell away a little at the end of the year.
He slipped out of the top 50 again, but the bottom line is that he will be satisfied with many months. A successful Masters would be immensely important for a conciliatory finish, can he manage that?
He won 6-2, 6-4 against Arthur Fils at the start, showing no difficulties at all. One round further on, the eagerly awaited duel against Taylor Fritz should have taken place
Altmaier knew that he would need a perfect day to win, but as the American had to withdraw at short notice, he was declared the winner without a fight. The toughest opponent was now waiting, in the person of Holger Rune.
Just over two years ago, the two duelled once in a qualifier, with Rune narrowly winning 6-2, 6-7, 7-6. If we go purely by the world rankings, it is of course clear who will be ahead on Thursday.
While Altmaier is slightly behind the top 50, Rune is still one of the ten best players in the world. What’s more, if the German plays the first Masters in Paris, his young opponent here will be the defending champion!
These facts must also have an impact on the odds, which are 1.20 to 4.30 with our betting providers. Conversely, a set win by Altmaier already creates a 2.00.
Holger Rune had to realize in 2023: Even if you’re celebrated as a child prodigy, that doesn’t necessarily mean that there are no more crises to overcome! He fell into a big hole in the summer in particular, which he now has to close again.
He is still fighting for a place at the ATP Finals in Turin, which requires an excellent performance in the French capital. After all, he has already made the start once

My Altmaier Rune tip
It’s only logical that I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Daniel Altmaier from a German perspective, but does he really have a realistic chance against Holger Rune on Thursday evening? The last few weeks have been very mixed.
Admittedly, the same can be said about the young Dane. But he seems to be stabilizing again, after his semi-final in Switzerland his victory over Dominic Thiem was very convincing. That’s why I don’t see much chance of victory for Altmaier:
Rune grabs the outright win!
