In the NBA Finals, the Eastern Conference champion and the Western Conference champion will meet. These are determined in the three rounds of the NBA Playoffs.

It is an unwritten law in the NBA Finals MVP Awards that only a player from the winning team may receive the award (the only exception to this rule was Jerry West in 1969).
This has led (albeit rarely) to a “by necessity” MVP being sought on the winning team, even though the best player in the Finals series played on the losing team.
