The track of the British Formula 1 GP
The Silverstone Formula 1 GP is run at the traditional and legendary Silverstone Circuit. In 1950, Silverstone hosted the first ever Formula 1 World Championship race.
The Silverstone Circuit, 100 kilometres north-west of London, was built on the site of a British Air Force military airfield established in 1943, the Royal Air Force Station Silverstone (RAF Silverstone for short).
Three years after the end of the Second World War, the area was converted into a race track in 1948, and the first races were still held on the runways. The circuit consisted practically only of long straights and tight hairpin bends.
The track was rebuilt for the 2010 season. The new part of the track, called “Silverstone Arena”, leads after the Abbey chicane to the right in the direction of Becketts and goes from there in a hairpin bend over a long straight to the Priory bend. This eliminates the famous Bridge Curve from the track plan.
The new circuit has been lengthened by 760 metres to 5.901 km and consists of 18 corners.
What makes the Silverstone Formula 1 GP so special?
The track is notorious for its 18 corners in total and its long straights – such as between turns 6 and 7 and between turns 11 and 12 and 16 and 17.
Many corners can be driven at full speed. For ideal laps, however, the grip of the tyres must be right. If the grip is not optimal, it is not ideal for the lap times.
The record winner on the Silverstone Formula 1 circuit is Lewis Hamilton with eight victories.

Who is favourite for the 2022 British Grand Prix
Who will win the 2022 British Grand Prix?
In terms of recent results, Max Verstappen is the heavy favourite to win the 2022 Silverstone GP.
The reigning world champion has won six of the last seven races – most recently two in a row: in Baku and most recently in Montreal.
This means that the Dutchman now also has a clear lead in the World Championship standings.
Who could be a threat to Verstappen at the British Grand Prix this Sunday?
His team-mate Sergio Perez is probably considered the biggest opponent. The Mexican is the only one who has been able to break “Mad Max’s” winning streak. That was at the race in Monte Carlo.
This again shows: The last seven races all went to the Red Bull racing team!
What are Ferrari’s chances at the 2022 British Grand Prix in Silverstone?
After the “Reds” had dominated at the beginning of the season, there is now a period of weakness. The last Ferrari victory was in Australia in April. Since then, the Italians with Ferrari star Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz are winless.
Leclerc, in particular, weakened considerably, while Sainz at least managed second place twice in Montreal and Monaco. Leclerc had at least taken pole position in Baku.
Can Lewis Hamilton, the record winner at Silverstone GP, win? Most recently in Montreal he showed a strong sign of life with 3rd place. But whether he can win for the 9th time at the Silverstone Circuit seems doubtful in view of the Red Bull dominance.
