The track of the Canada Formula 1 GP
The Formula 1 Canadian GP will be run at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. Named after the former Canadian Formula 1 driver who was killed in an accident in 1982.
The circuit is located on Île Notre-Dame, an artificial island in the Saint Lawrence River. When there are no races, parts of the track are open to normal traffic.
The location on the elongated island has created a fast race course with long straights. The track has a length of 4.361 km and is driven clockwise.
Since its debut in 1978, the track layout has hardly been changed. Major changes were the relocation of the start-finish line and the pit lane from the area behind the hairpin “Épingle des Stands” to behind the end of the straight “Droit du Casino” in 1987.

What makes the Montreal Formula 1 GP so special?
The track has been notorious since 1999 for the “Wall of Champions” at the end of the final chicane before the start and finish, where during the 1999 race the three F1 world champions Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve had to end the race prematurely due to a collision.
The 2011 Montreal GP was the longest (4:04:39.537 h) and slowest (average speed 74.864 km/h) race in Formula One history.
The cause was heavy rain and several accidents, which led to a total of 30 safety car laps (also a record).
The last 5 Canadian winners
Who is favourite for the Canada Grand Prix 2022?
Who will win the 2022 Montreal Grand Prix?
In terms of recent results, Max Verstappen is the heavy favourite to win the 2022 Canadian GP.
The reigning world champion won the Grand Prix in Baku last weekend. In total, Verstappen has won five of the eight races so far this season.
This also gives the Dutchman a clear lead in the world championship standings.
Who could be a threat to Verstappen at the Montreal Grand Prix this Sunday?
Ferrari star Charles Leclerc will probably be considered the biggest opponent. Although the Scuderia had big problems in Baku recently.
However, Leclerc has taken pole position in each of the last four races.
Other favourites to win the 2022 F1 Canada GP will be Sergio Perez – Verstappen’s teammate – and Carlos Sainz (Leclerc’s stablemate).
Perez was second in Baku and before that won the classic in Monte Carlo. Sainz lags a little behind the top trio in terms of results (no wins yet, four podiums this season), but he can still win in this Ferrari.
A tip for a podium finish could be Mercedes driver George Russell. The Briton was third in Azerbaijan last time out and has already scored three top-3 finishes this season.
