Wolverhampton Wanderers – Tottenham Hotspur

Two traditional clubs in unfamiliar straits face each other at the Molineux Stadium on Sunday: Wolves host Tottenham Hotspur. While Wolverhampton, in 17th place in the table, continues to fight against relegation, Spurs, in 14th place, are well below their usual standards. Only five points separate the two teams – a key game in the race for important points.

Recently, Wolves have presented themselves in much better shape and picked up valuable points in the relegation battle. Just last weekend, they managed a convincing 2-1 win at Ipswich Town. Tottenham, on the other hand, have only won once in their last five league games and also had to play against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League on Thursday – possibly a heavy burden for tired legs.

The head-to-head also tends to favor Wolverhampton: they have won three of the last five Premier League duels, most recently a thrilling 2-2 on New Year’s Eve. A win against Spurs could not only reduce the gap to Tottenham, but also create a tailwind to maneuver further away from the relegation zone.

Wolves Form & Record Check

Wolverhampton Wanderers are on an upward curve: they have not been beaten in five games, with three wins and two draws. The most recent 2-1 away win against Ipswich Town reflected their newfound morale: Pablo Sarabia equalized after falling behind early, before Jørgen Strand Larsen scored the winning goal.

The 1-0 home win against West Ham and the 2-1 win at Southampton also emphasize how much the team has gained in stability recently. Interestingly, Wolves scored in all five matches, which underlines their offensive strength. With 32 points, Vitor Pereira’s team currently ranks 17th in the table, just three points behind West Ham, but already twelve ahead of Ipswich – no reason to sound the all-clear, but a small buffer is in place.

They seem to be doing little wrong in the second half in particular. In 80% of their most recent matches, there were fewer than 1.5 goals before the break, while they were often able to step up a gear after the interval. Given Tottenham’s potential fatigue from the Europa League, this strength could pay off again on Sunday.

For the home game against Tottenham, Wolverhampton are likely to revert to a 3-4-2-1 formation. Agbadou, Doherty and Toti Gomes are likely to form the back three, with André and Gomes occupying the center of the midfield. Aït-Nouri and Semedo could start on the flanks, with Munetsi and Bellegarde operating as attacking midfielders behind them, with Jørgen Strand Larsen able to come on as a striker.

Coach Vitor Pereira will continue to be without Yerson Mosquera and Enso González, both with cruciate ligament ruptures, as well as Sasa Kalajdzic with the same injury. Whether Matheus Cunha will play from the start after his recent injury or will initially sit on the bench will be decided at short notice.

Tottenham Form & Balance Check

Tottenham are currently in 14th place in the table and are struggling with inconsistent performances. The 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League once again revealed their vulnerability in defense. Although they recently beat bottom-of-the-league Southampton 3-1, defeats to Chelsea (0-1) and Fulham (0-2) once again highlighted their inconsistency.

In the past five games, the Spurs have conceded goals in every game and have often looked shaky, especially after the break. The team does have creative minds in Maddison and Son, but they are rarely given a chance to shine. Coach Ange Postecoglou is therefore under scrutiny, especially as rumors of a possible successor Oliver Glasner are increasing the unrest. Now it remains to be seen whether Tottenham will take another step forward against the in-form Wolves.

At Spurs, the proven 4-3-3 continues to be the first choice for coach Postecoglou. The back four is likely to consist of Porro, Romero, van de Ven and Udogie, with Vicario between the posts. Bergvall, Maddison and Bentancur could start in midfield. Kulusevski and Drăgușin (cruciate ligament rupture) are both injured.

Up front, hopes rest on captain Son and new signing Solanke, supported by Johnson as a third offensive player. Richarlison and Tel are on standby as substitute options should Spurs need more firepower or fresh impetus.

Wolves – Tottenham Direct comparison & statistics

In direct comparison, the Wolves have clearly had the edge recently: they won three of their last five games against Tottenham, with one game ending in a draw. It is noticeable that four of these encounters saw fewer than 1.5 goals scored before half-time.

After the break, however, Wolverhampton often turned on the style. In 80% of the most recent duels, they scored after half-time, with no more than 2.5 goals overall being scored in this phase. Tottenham kept a clean sheet in just 20% of direct duels, which could be a sticking point again.
