Wolverhampton Wanderers vs. Manchester City

After a narrow 2-1 home win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, Manchester City continue their Premier League campaign with an away game at Wolverhampton Wanderes this weekend. Kick-off is at 13:30 on Saturday.

Following their two defeats in 2019/20, the Citizens have won all of their last four meetings with Wolves on a goal difference of 13-3. However, things could possibly get a little more exciting again this season. The hosts have defended superbly in their games so far, conceding just four goals after six matches. That is less than Wolves conceded in their last meeting with Manchester City (1:5).

Moreover, the Citizens have struggled away from home in the Premier League so far. Most recently, Pep Guardiola’s eleven did not manage more than a 1-1 draw at seventeenth-placed Aston Villa. Our Wolverhampton vs. Man City betting tips now tell you whether the star ensemble could also stumble at Wolverhampton.

 – Venue: Molineux Stadium, Wolverhampton
 – Competition: Premier League, Matchday 8
 – TV coverage: Sky

Wolverhampton Form & Balance Check

The hosts have not got off to a good start in the Premier League with just one point from their opening three games, but can at least build on their performances of recent weeks. The draw against was followed by the against on the penultimate matchday before Wolves played against last weekend. With only four goals conceded, they are actually the best defensive team in the Premier League after six matchdays.

Does the defence hold against Haaland & Co.?

That this is still the case after the home game against Manchester City may be highly doubted in the run-up to the match. Apart from Tottenham Hotspur, Wolves have yet to face a top English team. Nevertheless, they have only managed one win so far and scored only three goals of their own, together with West Ham the fewest in the league. In the coming weeks, therefore, the goal must be to finally become more goal-oriented in the offensive, without having to sacrifice stability in the defensive.

Wolverhampton facts & analysis

 – 6 points from 6 games
 – Last win 1-0 against Southampton
 – Currently the best defence in the league with 4 goals conceded

Man City form & balance check

After all these years without a classic, physically robust centre-forward, Manchester City signed just such a player in Erling Haaland in the summer. A few weeks later, the Norwegian’s transfer has already paid off for the reigning English champions. In the league, the 22-year-old has scored an incredible ten goals after six games, while on the international stage he has scored three goals in two Champions League matches so far. After his brace in the opening win in Sevilla (4-0), Haaland scored the golden winner against his former club Borussia Dortmund last Wednesday to make it 2-1.

Close thing against BVB

The Citizens had a hard time against a defensively well organised BVB throughout the game. Only a not entirely unstoppable long-range shot by John (80th) Stones and the acrobatic goal by Erling Haaland (84th) ensured the late turnaround. This once again confirmed the impression that the Skyblues have a completely new quality up front with Haaland, but that they still have to get used to the new game. In the league, the Citizens have only drawn at Aston Villa (1-1) and Newcastle United (3-3) and we can be curious whether it will not be enough for three points at Wolves.

Man City facts & analysis

 – 14 points from 6 games
 – Last played 1-1 against Aston Villa
 – Last 4 duels with Wolves won

Predicted line-up – last update on 16 September 2022

On Wolves’ side, we expect only one change compared to the 1-0 against Southampton. The newly injured Sasa Kalajdzic will be replaced by Hwang Hee-chan. Otherwise, only left-winger Chiquinho is out.

The Citizens will certainly rotate a bit due to the English week. Compared to the Champions League match against Dortmund, Phil Fode, Bernardo Silva and Julian Alvarez are possible options. John Stones could once again play right-back.

Wolverhampton – Man City direct comparison & stats

The overall direct comparison, with 42 to 38 wins and 23 draws, is very narrowly in favour of the Citizens, who have of course picked up a lot in recent years. The Skyblues have won all four of their recent meetings with Wolves, most recently 5-1 away, with Kevin De Bruyne scoring four times in that game.

 – The average number of first half goals in matches between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Manchester City is 1.6.
 – Wolverhampton Wanderers have won only 1 match out of their last 5 in Premier League against Manchester City.
 – When Wolverhampton Wanderers lead 1-0 in home games, they win 83% of them.
 – A look at Wolverhampton Wanderers: Daniel Podence is the top scorer with 2 goals. Erling Haaland scored 10 times for Manchester City.
