Wolfsburg form & record check
After a very mixed last season, the Wolves seem to have improved only slightly and it looks as if they will be part of the lower midfield again. They won one of the first four league games, but lost three of them. To tell the whole truth, however, the lost games were partly very unlucky, most recently at the weekend away to Leverkusen, where VfL conceded the decisive goal in injury time to lose 3:4.
They also didn’t perform badly against record champions Bayern (2-3) and Eintracht Frankfurt (1-2), but the results just aren’t good enough. They not only want to escape this dip in form with the next game, but also get their first home win of the season.
Confident at home
When it comes to playing at home in the Volkswagen Arena against VfB Stuttgart, Wolfsburg always seems to feel quite safe. The home record of the past 26 games against the Swabians is: 15 wins, three draws and eight defeats, with a goal difference of 45:30 from the perspective of Wolfsburg. These are impressive statistics, but Ralph Hasenhüttl’s team have not been able to win a single point at home this season, and so it is fair to say that they have a certain weakness at home.
Wolfsburg facts & analysis
- 13th place
- One win from the first four games
- Last game lost 3:4
Stuttgart Form & Record Check
After initial difficulties, it looks as if VfB Stuttgart is slowly getting on the right track. In the first game of this still young season, they drew away against Freiburg, and then they could only draw against Mainz in their first home game of the season. However, they emerged victorious from the last two weekends against Gladbach and Dortmund.
The 5-1 win against BVB last Sunday was nothing less than a demonstration of power, in which they did not let Borussia participate at all. With these seven points, they are currently in seventh place in the table and want to continue the upward trend of recent weeks.
Goalgetter
When VfB Stuttgart plays, spectators can look forward to goals. Although the Swabians have a very good offense, which, with Deniz Undav and Ermedin Demirovic, can be dangerous in any situation, at the same time they are often too unconcentrated at the back. So far, they have not kept a clean sheet in any league game, but because the offense is so strong, they have not had to worry about the result in recent games.
With a goal difference of 12:8, they are the team with the most goals scored, after Leverkusen (13:9). If they can overcome their defensive lapses and not lose their edge going forward, the season could be as successful as the last.
Stuttgart facts & analysis
- Seventh place in the table
- 12 goals in four games
- Last game won 5:1
Ralp Hasenhüttl will probably line his team up in a 4-1-4-1 again, but at the same time the classic 4-2-3-1, with which they played the first three games of the season, is also possible. In this case, the coach will have to do without midfielder Gerhardt (suspended for a red card), but he was only planned as a substitute anyway. It is questionable whether Tiago Tomás will start again, the left winger had to go down injured in the last game. Bence Dárdai could play for him. Otherwise, there will be no personnel changes.
In the last week, it has once again been impressively demonstrated that Sebastian Hoeneß’ system works. In a 4-4-2 with Undav and Demirovic as a double pivot, the Swabians have enough compactness in the center and, at the same time, enormous penetration. Hoeneß has no reason at all to change anything in terms of personnel, so it will go into the game in exactly the same way as it did against Dortmund.
Wolfsburg – Stuttgart head to head & statistics
So far, the two teams have met 56 times. 50 of these duels took place in the Bundesliga, and six times they played against each other in the DFB Cup. The statistics of these past matches are relatively even, with slight advantages for VfB. The Swabians have already been crowned winners 26 times, while Wolfsburg have only been able to win 22 times.
There have only been eight draws between the two. The last meeting, which also took place in Wolfsburg, had a lot of entertainment value. After going into the break with Stuttgart leading 1-0, both teams stepped up again in the second half and in the end, VfB managed to come out on top 3-2.
