VfL Wolfsburg vs. 1. FC Köln

The German football league is going from strength to strength and during the week the ball is rolling through the stadiums of the republic. On Tuesday and Wednesday evening, fans can look forward to the 16th and penultimate matchday of the first leg of the 2021/22 season. At 8:30 pm, there will be a duel between the Wolves from Lower Saxony and FC from Cologne, among others. Both lost on the last matchday, which is another reason why this match will be immensely important. You can read what we think about this match in our Wolfsburg – Cologne betting tip.

If we take a closer look at the table before matchday 16, we see that Wolfsburg is currently in a difficult phase. The men around coach Florian Kohfeldt have lost all of their last five games and the drop to 11th place is the logical consequence. Now they face 1. FC Köln, who were beaten 2-0 by FC Augsburg on the last matchday. Cologne also lost in front of their own fans for the first time this season.

Wolfsburg Form & Balance Check

Although rather involuntarily, Florian Kohfeldt entered the history books of VfL Wolfsburg last weekend. Never before in the long history of the Lower Saxons has a coach lost five competitive games in a row. Last week was VfL’s low point for the time being in this calendar year. First there was the 1:3 defeat in the premier league against Lille and thus also missing out on the Europa League, and last weekend there was a defeat in the Bundesliga. The Lower Saxons were defeated 0:2 by the Swabians from Stuttgart.

Offensive power is lacking

In recent years, VfL has always been able to convince with its good offence. As far as that is concerned, however, it’s really stuck at the moment. In the last five league defeats, there have only been two goals. One against BVB in the league and one goal last week in the Champions League against Lille. With just 15 goals, VfL has the worst offensive record in the league after the two bottom teams from Fürth and Bielefeld. For a club like Wolfsburg, that is clearly not enough and there will probably be another adjustment in the coming transfer window.

Wolfsburg facts & analysis
 – Lost last 5 competitive games
 – Only 20 points scored
 – Only 15 goals scored

Cologne Form & Balance Check

Cologne FC are playing their best season in 5 years and yet coach Steffen Baumgart in particular was anything but satisfied with the performance against FC Augsburg. Cologne was far too harmless, especially in tackling and in the forward play. After the game against Augsburg, Baumgart criticised the quality of his team. Even though FC suffered their first home defeat on the last matchday, things have been worse for Cologne before. FC can certainly live with a point in Wolfsburg.

Klassenerhalt is the goal

1. FC Köln could move past their upcoming opponents in the table with a win in Wolfsburg on Tuesday. The 19 points are more than FC fans had hoped for at this point in the season before the game. It will be important against Wolfsburg that the corners and free kicks of the Lower Saxons are well defended. With Brooks, Lacroix and of course Weghorst, Wolfsburg have several tall players in their own ranks.

Cologne facts & analysis
 – Best season in 5 years
 – Currently in 12th place with 19 points
 – Only one defeat from last five games

Predicted line-up – last update on 13 December 2021

For the Wolves, captain Casteels will move back between the posts. Pervan will return to the bench. Coach Kohfeldt is relying on a one-two with Nmecha and Weghorst. For FC Köln, it will be back to the usual 4-2-3-1. Goal scorer Modeste will play up front. Coach Baumgart still has a good alternative on the bench in Andersson
