The season opener went very differently for both sides. The hosts got off to an excellent start and only conceded their first goal on the last matchday at Real Betis (0:1), which was also their first defeat of the current season. Sevilla’s keeper Bono, on the other hand, has had to make plenty of saves. In the first five games, last year’s fourth-placed team has already conceded ten goals and has not got off to a good start.

Last weekend, however, Unai Emery’s side suffered their first defeat at Real Betis (0-1). In the 61st minute, Rodrigo Sanchez scored the only goal the Yellow Submarine has conceded so far, at least in the league. On the international stage, however, things look different. After the spectacular 4:3 victory in the opener against Pech Posen, Villarreal won the second game 2-1 at Hapoel Beer Shava last Thursday.

Sevilla form & balance check
In contrast to their upcoming opponents, who have almost exceeded their own expectations this season, Sevilla FC have made an absolute false start. After the 1:2 opening defeat at Osasuna, the Sevillistas first drew 1-1 with Real Valladolid, before the second away game at Almeria was also lost 1:2. A 3-0 home defeat to FC Barcelona followed, before Julen Lopetegui’s side finally got their first three points at Espanyol Barcelona (3-2) last weekend.
Is the knot broken now?
The Champions League participants were already comfortably ahead 3-0 after 45 minutes. Joselu and Martin Braithwaite scored again to make the game exciting, but in the end it did nothing to change the Sevillistas’ first win of the season. It will be interesting to see whether the knot has finally broken.
The six-time Europa League winners have not yet made a positive impression in the top flight either. After the 4-0 defeat against Manchester City, the Spaniards did not manage more than a goalless draw at FC Copenhagen on matchday 2. The team urgently needs to improve if they do not want to end up in the grey midfield this season.
