Two clubs that have stumbled through the season in almost mirror image fashion meet at the Mestalla: Valencia are 14th in the table, Espanyol 13th, both with 38 points. Whoever wins here will give themselves some breathing space – and perhaps the good feeling of shaking off the relegation battle early on.

Under Carlos Corberán, Valencia have not lost in five league games (three wins, two draws). Noteworthy: The hosts have scored in every game, with four ending with under 2.5 goals. The first half is usually tough, before more risk is taken after the break – as was the case in the 1-1 draw in Vallecas, when substitute Sadiq scored the winner. Barrenechea is doubtful (shoulder), but the bench looks deep enough to cope with any absences.

The 4-0 win at Rayo showed new defensive compactness, while the team has scored at least one goal in all of its games in 2025, 80% of which came after the break. The midfield trio of Lozano, González, and Expósito provides balance; only Gragera’s absence is still felt. Despite their run, the Catalans are only one point above 15th place, so there is no reason to sit back and relax.
Espanyol are likely to start in a 4-2-3-1 formation once again: García; Pierre-Gabriel, Calero, Cabrera, Oliván; Lozano, González; Carreras, Expósito, Roca; Fernández. Gragera is out, but no other changes are expected. The well-rehearsed framework should ensure control and late attacking thrusts.
