Union Form & Balance Check
Union Berlin continue to surprise the Bundesliga and are in contention for a Champions League spot for the first time this season. Despite playing only their fourth season in Germany’s top division, coach Urs Fischer’s side are third in the table and four points clear of fifth-placed SC Freiburg.
The previous week, however, the Köpenickers returned empty-handed from the top match in Dortmund. The FCU ultimately lost 1:2 in an exciting match. In addition, the Köpenickers were eliminated in the Europa League in the round of 16 against Saint-Gilloise. Nevertheless, Union has only lost two games in the Bundesliga in the new year and continues to mix up the league.
There’s no place like home
1. FC Union Berlin is a power at the Alte Försterei. The stadium in Köpenick is a tough nut to crack for opposing teams, as Union have yet to lose a home game in the league this season. Union’s home record is therefore quite respectable: Urs Fischer’s team is in third place in the home table behind Bayern and Dortmund.
Particularly impressive is the performance of Union’s defence, which has conceded only eight goals in 13 Bundesliga games at the Alte Försterei. Apart from one exception in a match against Augsburg at the end of last year, no team managed to score more than one goal against Union at the Stadion an der Wuhle. In the last four home games, FCU even remained without conceding a goal.
Union facts & analysis
- Currently in third place in the Bundesliga table.
- Second best defence in the Bundesliga
- Still without a home defeat this Bundesliga season
Bochum form & balance check
VfL Bochum are in a difficult situation and are fighting hard to avoid relegation to the 2. Bundesliga. Nevertheless, the team led by coach Thomas Letsch has picked up important points in recent games. The team from Castroper Straße bagged a strong seven points in the last four Bundesliga games.
In the previous week, the VfL had the chance to secure their relegation in a direct duel against Stuttgart. However, the VfL defence made some inexplicable individual mistakes. In the end, the Bochum team lost 2:3. As a result, VfL slipped to 15th place and is now only three points ahead of VfB Stuttgart, who are one place further down the table.
Shaky defence
The individual mistakes committed in Bochum’s defence last week, however, are not a rarity at Castroper Straße. VfL lost their two regular centre-backs Maxim Leitsch and Armel Bella-Kotchap before this season. The loss of this duo has not been properly compensated for until now.
With Ivan Ordets and Erhan Masovic, the VfL now has a reasonably well-rehearsed central defence, but not everything is running smoothly in Bochum’s defence. Coach Thomas Letsch’s team has by far the worst defence in the Bundesliga. The VfL conceded an unbelievable 60 goals in the first 27 games of the season.
Bochum facts & analysis
- The second-worst attack in the league.
- The worst defence in the league
- Three points clear of relegation place
Predicted line-up – last update on 15 April 2023
Union will once again start the match against VfL Bochum in the familiar 3-5-2 system. Aïssa Laïdouni will probably move back into central midfield alongside Khedira and Haberer. Whether Jérôme Roussillon will be fit for the starting eleven again after his muscular problems will only be decided in the short term.
Bochum recently impressed in Frankfurt with a diamond shape in midfield. Against Union, we expect the VfL to play in this basic formation again. Captain Anthony Losilla, however, will miss the weekend with a yellow suspension. Pierre Kunde could move into the starting eleven in his place.
