Union Berlin vs. VfL Wolfsburg
As is often the case, the teams in action at the end of the matchday in the Bundesliga are those that were away in the Europa League and/or Conference League on Thursday night. At 15:30 we can look forward to the appearance of the Ironmen from Berlin. Union have the Wolves as guests and the reigning league leaders will naturally want to defend their top position. Find out what we think about the upcoming match in our Union Berlin – Wolfsburg tip.
Things could hardly be going better for the Berliners at the moment. After the first six match days, Eisern Union is greeting us from the top of the table. Coach Urs Fischer’s team won 1-0 in Cologne on the last matchday and now the Wolves are expected to follow suit. After five games without a win, the Wolves finally got their first victory. Coach Niko Kovac’s team narrowly won 1-0 against Eintracht Frankfurt. It will be interesting to see who can carry the momentum from the last game and secure the three points on Sunday.

Union Berlin Form & Balance Check
If there is one team in German professional football that is really running smoothly at the moment, it is the Ironmen from Berlin. The club from Köpenick made the best start to the season in the club’s history and greets Union with 14 points at the top of the table. Coach Urs Fischer’s team has won four matches and drawn two. Last weekend, things went like clockwork once again. Union played host to FC Köln and against the men from the Rhine it was an own goal by centre-back Hübers that secured Union the three points and with it the top spot in the table.
Internationally unlucky again
During the week, Berlin made their second appearance in the Europa League. After the 0:1 last week against Saint-Gilloise, the opponent this time was SC Braga. The Union team had the better chances against the Portuguese team, especially in the first half, but once again the famous centimetres were missing. In the end, Fischer’s team was beaten 0:1 and it will now be extremely difficult for them to progress to the next round.
Union Berlin facts & analysis
– Still without defeat in the league
– Last lost with 0:1 in Braga
– Top of the table with 14 points
Wolfsburg Form & Balance Check
The VfL can win after all. Last weekend’s win at Frankfurt Eintracht was virtually vital for survival. However, nobody can be satisfied with the five points after six matchdays. Wolfsburg have undoubtedly made the worst start to the season in their history. At least the Frankfurt side scored again recently, after the VfL had gone without a goal in each of the two previous away games. Coach Kovac will have to come up with something, though, because the Wolves’ attack has been anything but dangerous so far.
Finally out of the cellar?
The relegation place is by far not the claim of the Wolves and even if there was a new coach with Niko Kovac and everything still has to find itself a little, we expect much more from VfL. The Lower Saxons travel to Berlin on Sunday and Wolfsburg have not won at the Eisernen for 30 years.
The key to success at the Alte Försterei will be the attack. If we take a closer look at the bare figures, that’s exactly where the problem lies. In three of the last five games, VfL failed to score a goal of their own. Against the best defence in the league (only four goals conceded), coach Kovac will probably have to come up with a new tactic. Perhaps the corners that led to the victory in Frankfurt will do the trick again on Sunday
Wolfsburg facts & analysis
– Only 1 win from the first 6 games.
– Last win with 1:0 in Frankfurt
– 3 of last 5 games without own goal
Predicted line-up – last update on 16 September 2022
For the Berliners, it will come down to a 3-3-2-2 on Sunday, as it almost always has in recent weeks. There is still a question mark behind centre-back Doekhi. Should the Dutchman not be fit in time, Jaeckel will be available as a replacement. Otherwise, coach Urs Fischer should be able to rely on his regulars.
The upcoming opponents from the Autostadt will be looking for their second win in a row with a 4-4-2 formation. Coach Kovac will leave his back four unchanged compared to the 1:0 in Frankfurt. The midfield with Arnold and Franjic in the centre also remains the same. In attack, Nmecha and Waldschmidt are expected to do the trick.
