The Bundesliga is slowly picking up speed and fans are once again enjoying weekly soccer. Matchday 2 is on the agenda this weekend, with Union Berlin and FC St. Pauli kicking things off on Friday evening. Find out who will win in this game and which bets are interesting in our Union Berlin – St. Pauli betting tip.

The Berliners drew 1-1 against Mainz 05 last weekend, and although the point is a good result, the Köpenickers must avoid being at the bottom of the table from the start, as they were last season, at all costs and will be looking for a three-pointer against St. Pauli.

Hamburg started the season with a defeat. The newly promoted side want to prove that they belong in the Bundesliga and will therefore be fighting for points week in, week out. It remains to be seen whether they will get their first points of the season against Berlin.

Union Berlin Form & Balance Check

The Berliners have made a solid start to the season. A narrow 1:0 win in the first round of the DFB Cup against Greifswalder FC meant that they had already won their first competitive match of the new season. Against Mainz, the team of new coach Bo Svensson, who faced his former club in his first Bundesliga match as head coach of the Eisern, proved to be on a par.

Thanks to László Bénes’ equalizer, the first point of the season was secured. The team is now in tenth place in the table and if they win at home against St. Pauli, the season can be considered a success

New coach with the right touch

With Svensson, calm should finally return to the Berlin sidelines this season. The Norwegian seems to be doing a good job so far and has yet to suffer a defeat, which is also down to his good switching decisions. In the cup match against Greifswald, it was Yorbe Vertessen who scored the decisive 1:0 winner just three minutes after coming on as a substitute.

Svensson also proved to have the right touch in the league last weekend, bringing Bénes off the bench to score the decisive goal, who only needed two minutes to score. The changes not only show that the new coach has a good sense of who can change the game again from his bench, but also that the Berlin squad is not badly staffed offensively this year

St. Pauli Form & Balance Check

St. Pauli were beaten 2-0 by Conference League qualifiers Heidenheim in their first Bundesliga match since 2011. Hamburg were actually in control of the game, proving to be the more active team with 58% possession and eleven shots on goal, but were punished coldly by Heidenheim’s effectiveness. The opening defeat means 18th place for St. Pauli for the time being.

The weekend before, the Kiezkickers faced Hallescher FC in the cup. Coach Alexander Blessin’s team struggled against the regional league club and only won the game after 120 minutes thanks to Lars Ritzka’s goal in extra time

Irvine extended

In addition to the defeat against Heidenheim, there was still some good news to announce at the weekend. Captain Jackson Irvine has extended his contract in Hamburg early, which is a clear sign from both sides. For the club management, the 31-year-old Australian is one of the absolute top performers and the leader of the team. Irvine feels at home at St. Pauli and lives the club’s values like no other.

He was already there when the club was battling relegation in the 2nd division and announced his first contract extension in the midst of a difficult phase. With six goals and nine assists in the last season, he was instrumental in getting the Millerntor back into the Bundesliga. Irvine and St. Pauli fit like a glove

St. Pauli facts & analysis
  • Last game lost
  • 18th place in the table
  • Still without a goal in the Bundesliga

Union Berlin play with a 3-3-2-2 formation. Kevin Vogt and Danilho Doekhi appear to be set in defense. Either Leopold Querfeld or Diogo Leite will be the third man. The coach is also spoiled for choice in midfield. We expect Lucas Tousart and Anrdás Schäfer to be back in the starting eleven, although goalscorer Bénes could also return to the starting line-up. Vertessen and Tim Skarke come off the bench.

St. Pauli will line up in a 3-4-1-2 system. The defense is led by Eric Smith. Connor Metcalfe is set to play in the ten-man position and the front two of Johannes Eggestein and Morgan Guilavogui will once again start, as they did in the first two competitive matches. Manolis Saliakas and Elias Saad are available as substitutes
