The Berliners have made a solid start to the season. A narrow 1:0 win in the first round of the DFB Cup against Greifswalder FC meant that they had already won their first competitive match of the new season. With Svensson, calm should finally return to the Berlin sidelines this season. The Norwegian seems to be doing a good job so far and has yet to suffer a defeat, which is also down to his good switching decisions. In the cup match against Greifswald, it was Yorbe Vertessen who scored the decisive 1:0 winner just three minutes after coming on as a substitute.
Svensson also proved to have the right touch in the league last weekend, bringing Bénes off the bench to score the decisive goal, who only needed two minutes to score. The changes not only show that the new coach has a good sense of who can change the game again from his bench, but also that the Berlin squad is not badly staffed offensively this year

St. Pauli Form & Balance Check
St. Pauli were beaten 2-0 by Conference League qualifiers Heidenheim in their first Bundesliga match since 2011. Hamburg were actually in control of the game, proving to be the more active team with 58% possession and eleven shots on goal, but were punished coldly by Heidenheim’s effectiveness. The opening defeat means 18th place for St. Pauli for the time being.

Captain Jackson Irvine has extended his contract in Hamburg early, which is a clear sign from both sides. For the club management, the 31-year-old Australian is one of the absolute top performers and the leader of the team. Irvine feels at home at St. Pauli and lives the club’s values like no other.
He was already there when the club was battling relegation in the 2nd division and announced his first contract extension in the midst of a difficult phase.
