Sevilla – Atletico Madrid

Two crisis-hit teams face each other at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán: Sevilla FC host Atlético Madrid on Sunday afternoon. The Andalusians are currently in 11th place in the table and are looking for consistency under coach Francisco “Xavi” García Pimienta. Most recently, there was a bitter 1-2 defeat in the city derby against Betis.

Atlético, on the other hand, also started April with a 1-0 home defeat against Barcelona after a disappointing March. The Colchoneros, currently third in the table, are six points behind leaders Real Madrid and appear to be mentally weakened. Interestingly, the last meeting between the two teams in December 2024 ended in a high-scoring 4-3 win for Atlético, although their matches are usually rather tactical. Sevilla won 1-0 at home in February 2024 and will be hoping to build on that performance again. While Sevilla defender Tanguy Nianzou will miss the rest of the season with a muscle injury, Lucien Agoumé and Djibril Sow are available to return from suspension.

Sevilla Form & Bilanz Check

The Andalusians continue to find themselves in a difficult phase. Despite their mid-table position in the table, five points from their last five league games show how much their form has fluctuated recently.

Their forward line in particular is often lacking in penetration: Sevilla have scored one goal at best in four of their last five games. In addition, in 80% of these matches, there were fewer than 1.5 goals in the first half. The away win at Real Sociedad (1-0) about a month ago briefly raised hopes, but there were setbacks against Athletic Club (0-1) and most recently in the derby. Djibril Sow and Lucien Agoumé are back in the squad, giving coach García Pimienta more options in midfield.

In the upcoming clash against Atlético, García Pimienta is likely to stick with his proven 4-2-3-1 formation. Fernández is expected to be in goal, while Carmona, Salas, Badé and Pedrosa will form the defense. In midfield, Djibril Sow and Lucien Agoumé are back from their suspensions and could stabilize the center together with Gudelj. On the offensive side, Suso, Sánchez and Agoumé should provide scoring opportunities behind striker Romero.

The injured Tanguy Nianzou, on the other hand, remains out of action and is likely to be out until the end of the season. Despite his absence, Sevilla hope that this formation will help them to overcome the weaknesses of recent weeks.

Atletico Madrid Form & Balance Check

Atlético Madrid have lost a lot of ground after a strong start to the year. Diego Simeone’s team have had to accept a series of disappointing results recently, including the narrow 1-0 cup defeat to Barcelona. You might think that the Rojiblancos have lost their otherwise characteristic defensive strength and at the same time their offensive drive, because they have not scored in the first half for five games now.

In La Liga, a 1-1 draw against Espanyol and defeats to Barcelona (4-2) and Getafe (2-1) made the situation worse. They are now six points behind league leaders Real Madrid. Atlético’s run in the Champions League also ended in March against city rivals Real in a penalty shootout. Although they scored in 80% of their last five games, they conceded just as many goals. In particular, the strike duo Julián Álvarez and Alexander Sørloth are not playing at their best – a turnaround would be urgently needed to avoid losing third place to Athletic Bilbao.

Atlético are also expected to field their usual 5-3-2, with Musso between the posts and a back five of Llorente, Azpilicueta, Giménez, Le Normand and Reinildo. De Paul, Barrios and Lemar are likely to start in the center of the park. On the wings, the team should be able to manage without captain Koke for the time being, who is still injured.

The duo of Álvarez and Sørloth will presumably start in attack, although it will be interesting to see whether Griezmann is once again only on the bench after the cup defeat to Barcelona. For Simeone, the main thing is to stabilize the defense and stop the negative run – but system adjustments are not out of the question.

Sevilla – Atletico Madrid head to head & statistics

Atlético have the edge in the most recent meetings, with the Madrilenians winning three of the last five head-to-head clashes, while Sevilla have only been successful once. However, the spectacular 4-3 in December 2024 was an exception; before that, it was mostly much more restrained – in four of the last five meetings, fewer than 2.5 goals were scored.

In particular, the first half is often quiet between the two teams. In several encounters, they stayed under 1.5 goals before the break. While Atlético are on the up after the break, Sevilla have conceded a goal in the second half in three consecutive games. Nevertheless, the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán is by no means a sure thing for the Colchoneros: Sevilla proved in February 2024 that they can beat Atlético at home with a 1-0 win.
