Sevilla FC vs. Villarreal CF
Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are the big players in Spanish football. However, you don’t have to be a clairvoyant to know that there are more teams in La Liga that play some respectable football. For example, teams like Sevilla, Villarreal and Real Sociedad have recently been in international business year after year. In addition, the “quasi-collapse” of FC Barcelona favours the advance of the “smaller big boys”.
Two of the aforementioned clubs, namely Sevilla and Villareal, meet on Saturday for a top La Liga match. With our Sevilla – Villarreal tip you can find out everything you need to know about this clash. Will Sevilla keep up with leaders Real Madrid or will Villareal FC make a small leap out of mid-table?
While Sevilla FC are fighting for the top 3 in the Spanish league this year, Villarreal FC are languishing in the middle of nowhere. Sevilla are effectively taking the place of FC Barcelona. A brutally good start to the season, coupled with a bombastic defence, have helped the Andalusians to this comfortable position. Villarreal, in contrast, are far below their own standards. After winning the Europa League last year, the euphoria was great. However, after 15 matchdays and 12th place in the table, this euphoria quickly faded away.

Sevilla Form & Balance Check
Sevilla FC are currently in fourth place in the Spanish La Liga. They are not undeservedly there either. In the 15 match days so far, the Andalusians have only suffered two defeats. The first was an avoidable 1:0 against Granada, while the second was a very strong performance against leaders Real Madrid that fell just short of a point. To these two defeats must be added four draws and a remarkable eight wins. They have also shown their strong form in the last five games. While the two draws against Mallorca and Alaves are not so well received, the two 2-0 victories over city rivals Real Betis and Osasuna are more convincing.
Last weekend, the Andalusians faced their biggest challenge so far – away at Real Madrid. As mentioned at the beginning, this match was lost by a narrow margin, but they can still be proud of the performance they showed. Only the individual class and the incredible run of Vinicius Junior and Karim Benzema were decisive for this defeat. Nevertheless, the performance against Real should give them confidence going into the clash with Villarreal with their heads held high.
Everything in your own hands
Sevilla FC are not only in the Spanish league this season, but also in the Champions League. There they have collected six points in five games so far. What doesn’t sound very promising at first is nevertheless very comfortable. Because Sevilla’s upcoming and last opponent in the group stage is RB Salzburg, who are only one point ahead of them in second place. So the FCS can make the round of 16 on their own. However, only three points will bring the desired success to Andalusia.
Sevilla facts & analysis
– Sevilla currently in 4th place in the table
– Most recently lost very narrowly against Real Madrid
– City derby won against Betis
– Everything in their own hands in the CL
Villarreal form & balance check
The yellow submarine from Villarreal is a bit of a Trojan horse so far. Because the season of Unai Emery’s team is not as bad as the table situation suggests. Of course, 12th place in the table is not justifiable for a team like Villarreal, but they still only have two more defeats than their upcoming opponents from Sevilla, who are currently fifth. The poor ranking is rather due to the fact that the yellow submarine does not manage to win games.
The four defeats already mentioned are offset by only three wins and a whole seven draws. The draws are better than defeats, but they don’t really move Villarreal up in the table. The last five games sum up the season quite well so far. In addition to two defeats against Valencia and Barcelona, which can be tolerated, there are two draws against Cadiz and Celta Vigo on the calendar, both of which are even further down the table. Villarreal must win these games if they want to live up to their own expectations. They showed that they can in their 1-0 win over Getafe.
You can do it in Europe, too
That Villarreal are not on the edge of the abyss and all is bad is shown by their performance in the top flight, for which they qualified thanks to winning the Europa League last year. There, the yellow submarine is just behind Manchester United in second place shortly before the end of the group stage. They are only there because they picked up points against teams like Young Boys Bern and Atalanta Bergamo. Apparently, it’s not so easy to produce the same performance in the Champions League in the league. That’s where you notice the effects of the double burden.
Villarreal facts & analysis
– Villareal below their own standard in the league.
– Far too many draws 7
– On course for the last 16 in the CL
– Everything in their own hands on the last matchday against Atalanta
Predicted line-up – last update on 2 December 2021
Julen Lopetegui has no reason in principle to change his first eleven. The performance against Real Madrid was very appealing and no player is suspended for the clash against Villarreal. Unai Emery can also be satisfied with the performance against Barcelona. One consideration will be to reward young Chukwueze for his goal against Barca and bring him on from the start. However, again, there may not be any changes.
